Artist Beware - alienpaw

WHO: alienpaw / bootiehole

WHERE: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/bootiehole/

WHAT: $40 favorite food badge.

WHEN: I paid on 11/30/2016 and A WIP was posted on instagram on 2/13/2017. I received the finished piece and contacted them on furaffinity about changes on 3/27/2017. I contacted them again on twitter on 3/31/2017, this was the last time they communicated with me. I tried contacting them again several months later on 8/17/2017 and 8/22/2017 with no response.

EXPLAIN: I commissioned alienpaw back in 11/30/2016 for a favorite food badge of my fursona. They quickly responded to my inquiry and sent me a note requesting info required for the badge and their Paypal address. I paid the same day I received the note (https://sta.sh/01ulggzyispv).

A couple months went by with no updates on their Trello. I understand how long art can take so I didn't mind at all. At this point I also began following their Instagram account because I had seen that they would upload WIP pictures. On 2/13/2017, they posted a WIP on their Instagram (https://sta.sh/01nps8rvvq0h). I thought the WIP looked great and I was excited to see it finished. One thing that I didn't understand then though (and that I don't really understand now), is that they stated in their T.O.S. that they don't send out WIPs (https://sta.sh/0nfnlhie2l0). I don't really understand why you would publicly upload a WIP but not send it to the commissioner. I tend to be non-confrontational and everything was looking great so far, so I didn't say anything.

Another month or so passes, and on 3/27/2017, I received the finished piece (https://sta.sh/01bs8m6agxn6). I was very upset with the finished picture because I had imagined it would look like the WIP, but for some reason they completely redrew it. I don't think I would've had too much of a issue with that if they hadn't left out my fursona's hair.
I commented on the submission on Furaffinity on the same day thanking them for the commission and asking if they could possibly add my fursona's hair (https://sta.sh/06xfn20ulfr). They never responded to my comment, so I DM'd them on Twitter on 3/31/2017.

They responded to me this time around (https://sta.sh/01mqqfp02kf6). They stated that they would see if they could find the time to add the hair because they had school and other commissions to work on. This was understandable to me. But what made me upset was them trying to blame me for causing them to not draw the hair because I never specified for them to draw it and there being a small part on the reference sheet without it (https://sta.sh/0lvfro2do56). It honestly confused me because the original WIP they posted had hair... I tried not to let it bother me, and told them that that section was there for markings (https://sta.sh/01lnzvpkiw9m).

This was the last time they communicated with me. I waited months with absolutely no updates while they took more commissions and opened a online shop. I got fed up as the end of the summer approached, as it had been months with no communication, so I DM'd them again on 8/17 and 8/22 (https://sta.sh/07s53x2ba53) which got no response either times.

PROOF: https://sta.sh/2wsjchuxvne?edit=1

Update #1: I sent them another DM on twitter making them aware of the beware. They responded back to me and then offered to completely redraw the badge and send me WIPs along the way. I'm very grateful that they offered this, because I know some artists wouldn't do that! I accepted, and received a WIP of the lineart. Now all that's left is to wait for the finished piece and this will all be resolved c:!
Alienpaw also replied to this post clearing up some more things (https://artists-beware.livejournal.com/973731.html?thread=33299619#t33299619)!
DMs can be read here (https://sta.sh/212x1ecghbnf?edit=1).

Update #2: I received the finished piece on 11/9/17! This has been resolved :)!
Artist's beware has moved!
Do NOT repost your old bewares. They are being archived.

Um.... what? How.... How.... Just... no.
Oct. 16th, 2017 12:44 am (UTC)

The WIP and the finished art look nothing alike - I can't imagine why they would suddenly remove the hair and change the hands, eyes, mouth, ears..everything? It's such an abrupt style change too.

Very disappointing.
Oct. 19th, 2017 12:15 am (UTC)
It really is! There's literally nothing else in their gallery in the same style so I don't really get why they did that?
Oct. 16th, 2017 12:48 am (UTC)
This is one of the most bizarre bewares I've seen a while. I'm honestly not sure how someone could look at the ref sheet and assume the hair is "optional".

And the WIP looks nothing like what you got. The other items made on this base haven't deviated from it, so what on earth happened?
Oct. 16th, 2017 03:13 pm (UTC)
I cannot understand why they would completely redraw the WIP. It costs them more time and effort for something they pretty much had done!

and that bit about the hair is so puzzling! They drew the character with hair originally, why not add it again?

I cannot understand the logic of this artist at all!
Oct. 16th, 2017 06:24 pm (UTC)
If they were confused, why didn't they just... ask you if you wanted hair or not? Sometimes things like that CAN be a choice but they also added the hair onto the original sketch? I don't blame you for being disappointed.
Oct. 19th, 2017 12:18 am (UTC)
Yeah that's definitely a major point of confusion to me. Hair is typically a major part of a design, so I don't quite get why they didn't just ask me? It literally would've taken a minute.
And yeah, especially because the hair was in the original WIP.
None of it makes a lot of sense to me.
Oct. 16th, 2017 08:32 pm (UTC)
The coloring/lines on the hands/utensils looks rushed compared to the rest. I wonder why they redrew it when they're using the original for at least one other badge afterwards?
Oct. 19th, 2017 12:21 am (UTC)
I really didn't how rushed it looked until you pointed it out! I haven't really looked at it enough to notice.
But yeah, it really does appear rushed! Every other badge they have done for this has been nice and clean but mine appears to be pretty sketchy in some parts. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me because they appear to be making this off of a base? Why in the world would they redraw it if it looked perfectly fine beforehand...?
Oct. 17th, 2017 12:42 am (UTC)
This is.... just plain odd. The WIP and finished image are totally different and its CLEAR they drew the hair originally?

Also its very obvious the non hair image is just for markings as theres a clear section for hair styles.

Honestly with the rushed parts that someone else mentioned it looks like they just rushed to finish it. Keep pushing for a fix, and I'd bring up that the WIP had hair, and they need to add it because your character HAS hair in the ref.
Oct. 19th, 2017 12:29 am (UTC)
I'm not quite sure why they would rush to finish it but it certainly feels that way.
I'll definitely keep pushing for a fix!
Oct. 17th, 2017 09:41 am (UTC)
This is very weird, why show and upload a Wip and then decide to scratch that and do something very different?
Oct. 18th, 2017 01:11 am (UTC)
I have to agree with the sentiment that there's no way anyone could reasonably think that your fursona should be drawn without hair just because the heads meant to show off the markings don't have it. That'd be like drawing her without a tail because her back view doesn't have one visible...
Oct. 19th, 2017 12:24 am (UTC)
Exactly! And if they had been following just the heads, they would've also had no horns. If you are going to say the reason you didn't draw the hair was because of that section, it makes no sense that you would still include the horns. It feels kind of contradictory?
Oct. 18th, 2017 02:21 pm (UTC)
This is confusing. I've been looking at the WIP and the finished image for a while, and can't come up with an explanation for the hair yet, but for the hands-it looks like in the WIP she has four fingers shown, and a thumb hidden (otherwise she couldn't hold the cutlery like that) for a total of five. Maybe it was redrawn to fit the correct number of four total? And they were elongated to better allow for the different colours?
Oct. 18th, 2017 05:45 pm (UTC)
I don't think so. They may have a reason for doing it but I don't think it's that.

This was done after: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/24215742/
These were done before: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/22727987/

So they have a specific style going on. I mean, maybe they did want to show the markings more, but they had no trouble with the coloured fingers on the other and it should be very similar?

I was half wondering if they had accidentally opened the wrong file and just finished it thinking it was correct, but then I saw her batch of them where yours is the only one that doesn't use the base...lmao? This is perplexing and also very disappointing. I hope they right this.

Edit: Also, speaking as an artist it's super wrong of them to have blamed this on you. Regarding the reference sheet situation, I don't really understand how they misconstrued that..

That was my first thought, too. But the food is exactly the same... so it was edited from the base for some weird reason.

They're actively asking their followers about taking on more commissions and pretty bothersome considering this situation they got themselves into with you :c

You've been very patient in trying to resolve the matter in private, but have you attempted a follow-up DM or even just directly responding to one of their tweets to catch their attention again?
Oct. 19th, 2017 04:18 pm (UTC)
I sent them another DM just recently and got a response! Ill be updating the post as soon as I can.
Oct. 19th, 2017 01:55 pm (UTC)
ahhh that’s such a weird situation. even if the stylistic choices behind the badges didn’t call for hair, they could have said that? but if all the other ones including the wip had hair is super confusing.

i hope they respond to you soon and it’s a really simple fix imho.
Oct. 19th, 2017 04:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah its a weird kinda situation for sure! I DM'd them again got a response this time and it looks like a resolution will be on its way soon :)!

I wonder if maybe something happened behind the scenes, like they lost the WIP file and the base to a computer crash or something and decided to rush yours from scratch instead of telling you what happened? This is just so strange.

It's a shame too, their style is super cute.

Hello all! Alienpaw here!
I wanted to address some of the issues here, and let you all know what's going on.

The reason for the couple of months going by, I was very very busy in school, and unhappy with my current status in school, which was why the art was delayed.

As for my TOS stating that I don't send out WIPs, my tos is on my furaffinity, which i'm relatively not very active on anymore, and honestly needs to be updated! I have no problem sending out WIPS, and actually prefer it now!

As for the finished piece looking completely different than the other. The past ones were done in a base, and after months of doing them, I wanted to try something a bit less chibi. So I started from scratch and did it over. I made a large mistake there, and I should have sent her the new sketch letting her know I was redoing it.

So I re did it, and (its been a while now) but for some reason I had this assumption (for the longest time) that the hair was optional. Even though looking at the ref now, it seems ridiculous that I did the character without the hair, because the hairs almost in every reference.

As for not responding, I felt justified in the time that telling her that I felt that the hair was optional (I was wrong) and therefore put her messages on the backburner hard. I read them and then forgot to respond.

I've now responded to the commissioners message, and I've told her I'm redoing the entire piece!
Which I would prefer anyway, because she was unhappy with the signifigant style change without even asking.

This was my bad, and I just want to make it clear I'd like to resolve it. When her commission was happening, and when she had messaged me, I was in a bad place with school and overwelmed.

I've learned from my mistakes and I'm definitely doing my absolute best to get back to the high standards of keeping quality work and keeping my commissioners in the loop and happy.

Sorry again OP!
