WHO: Millenium-Millie-Gryphon AKA Millie AKA Onyx AKA Onyx Art Studios

WHERE: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/millenium-millie-gryphon

WHAT: 2 x circus poster style images of my otter shape

WHEN: Claimed slots, provided references and paid on February 14th. Inquired on progress April 10th, got response and first pic on April 16th, which was of a wrong character. After informing the artist of that, she did the second pic, then said she will redraw this one, then delayed past the paypal dispute deadline after which stopped responding to notes (still reading them and taking other commissions).

EXPLAIN: Millie opens these commissions via journals/picture announcements on a regular basis. I took two slots and sent info February 14th, 2017, paid same day.

After no progress for a couple months, I’ve contacted Millie on April 10th to check on the progress, and got a response with one image April 16th. There was one problem with that though, it was a wrong character, which I told her. We have reconfirmed the correct references, and May 7th, I got the second picture. That one was pretty well done. I again informed Millie that the first one was wrong, and also mentioned that it was supposed to go with another picture with the same subject from another artist. I have also requested the picture with the wrong character taken down. She said she will redraw it, then it took a series of delays until paypal dispute deadline has expired (in hindsight, I should have opened it, but her staying in communication and being polite kind of led me astray). After that, she stopped responding to notes while reading them, being active and offering further commissions.

I don't think it's possible to open it on paypal after the deadline, and I dunno what you mean by going aggressive. She does not respond to my messages.

Darn, those circus posters looked so cool, too. But hearing the artist doesn't even send one WIP sketch, nope. They could have easily avoided this mess by sending one, being told it's the wrong character and not wasting all that work on the finished piece. Not to mention the horrible customer service once the PayPal window closed.

No wips (unless stated before hand) is deff something you dont want on a larger purchase, and would make me avoid the artist all together.

Is that second screenshot with the info for the character all of the details given to the artist for the commission? I am definitely not going to defend the artist's behavior, the paypal situation is beware worthy for sure, but I checked the linked journal and there is a large array of references there. If that one screenshot is all that was given, it would be really complicated to have a clear idea what the character is supposed to be like given the amount of references with different notes, and a bare description of the concepts at the start. It also feels unfair to say "the wrong character" as if they drew a completely different design, they just didn't capture the character of your character, possibly due to how the commission info was handled. I'd suggest for future picking out one or two references at most (preferably one being a reference sheet), and any miscellaneous notes you need to add in text if they're important details.
That being said, they certainly should not have agreed to a redraw and then defaulted on it that way. For a slot in that price range, a WIP would have been a really good idea.

I thought that the artist drew a bear instead of an otter. If someone drew my character as a completely different species, I think I would consider that the wrong character and not just the wrong personality.I didn't see any links to a bear design or mention of a bear in the journal either.

It's probably just me, but Im having a really hard time reading your notes to them because of the way you're saying your characters. 'me ottah' and 'me bear'....

"...bear on the poster and show me ottah doing it'
Is this in reference to the other image by the other artist? Or did the artist do two images, poster and regular image? (plus the non messed up poster)

Also someone mentioned the refs, and I did go to the journal and while it is a bit confusing as an artist to have no true ref and a bunch of images/text mashed together... I dont see how they could have gotten your bear from there? Unless they specifically left that journal to go to your references hub and selected another character. You gave the link and specified OTTER.
While the refs are confusing, I disagree with the other user that said your refs may have played in on it unless the journal has been changed since they looked. (it only shows otter for me)

Since we cant see the images I have no idea if they truly did the wrong character or if they just messed it up so much it looks like a bear?

From how I understand it, the commissioner wanted a poster from the beware artist of their otter personality which advertised them in some kind of fire oriented show act, which another artist has drawn the scene of said character doing it. Seems they also commissioned the beware artist for something else, which apparently came out well.

I second more proof. We're all partially guessing in the dark.

Are you able to leave a public comment / shout on the artist's page asking them to please get in contact with you? If they're not being responsive through notes, perhaps an attempt at public communication will encourage them to reply.

And if this is done, a screenshot of the original public message to prove it was sent in case the artist deletes the message, it would be a very good addition to the beware.

I'm the Artist in Question
Hello!
I was recently notified of this post by another commissioner of mine and I would like to clarify this all up and answer any questions that you may have.
(also I'm new to this site.. so be easy on me if the formatting comes out odd or something)

___________
-General Character Confusion-
The two characters commissioned at the same time were almost identical in both species and color.

In addition.. neither of the character have a ref sheet.
The 'refs' I was given was very overwhelming and extremely confusing.
Otter: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3935715
Bear: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3935703
___________
-Initial Reaction to Piece-
The commissioner did not initially indicate that they were upset with the completed piece.
I assumed that they were alright with it and wanted me to continue with the next piece.
https://sta.sh/0vw73bwqewj
It was not until much later after both piece's completion that they wanted alterations.
___________
-WIP's-
Another topic that I saw came up in the above comments was WIP's.
My terms of service clearly say that "I will send you progress images upon request and tweak the work so that it is to your liking, however once you have approved a stage (sketch, flat color, and shaded) I cannot go back change it."
The commissioner at hand did not ever request progress images, so none were provided.

___________
-Fixing of Work-
https://sta.sh/0fl3vz6asvc
The piece was altered as desired into the otter character.
I'm not sure what else I could do to amend this situation.
___________

If there are any additional questions, please feel free to ask.
I'm not a bad person or artist.. I always try my best to make the commissioning experience as smooth and fun as possible for both parties involved.

Re: I'm the Artist in Question
This... clears up a lot of things. You're certainly not a bad person or artist! No one here would say that based on this. Mostly, a lot of questions flying around since details seem to have gotten lost in translation, literally.

When was the piece edited and given to the commissioner?

Yes, there seems to have been a lot of miscommunication on both sides. Both could probably work on relaying what they mean better and they've both said some things I've felt were overly aggressive. The three months thing seems to be entirely a miscommunication issue.

OP was very rude asking for edits to the redone otter piece, but I feel like people looked over the fact that the artist was also rude when asked to fix the eyecolor, which was a legitimate mistake on their part (even if I can understand them not knowing accessories were always required).

Plus OP is being pretty aggressive in reply to people in this beware. If I hadn't already decided not to work with them in the past (issue was resolved so I don't see the need to go into it) I probably would have decided to do so from their response here. I don't want to be attacked if I forget something on their ref sheet-- which happens sometimes, even with clear refs and communication and me double checking, just due to human error.

I don't want this dragged any further, either, just did not expect to find a few dozens new comments here after the FA exchange. I can't reply on FA now (or for next few hours) though.

For what it's worth, I am sorry for all the mess and the miscommunication here. I've learned my lesson to be more direct and keep business and casual conversations separate.

And yes, you are a REALLY good artist -- art-wise. I would suggest using something like trello or doodle to keep a bit more organized though.
