WHO: Vani / AshKetchumSays / stripesandteeth

WHAT: $50 digital bust/ waist up commission

WHEN: I commissioned them in 2010/2011 (I don't have screencaps and the commission Journal was deleted, so I'm not 100% sure about the year but it was during that time)

I tried contacting them again today (08.10.2017) via Twitter and got a fast and professional response. They gave me an estimate when I will get a WIP and the finished badge. To be resolved.

Back then I was really happy so snag a slot, they posted pretty regularly on FA and I wasn't too worried about the long waitlist they had (sadly they deleted the Journal with the old list before I was able to get a screencap). I am a very patient commissioner and have waited up to 3 years for a commission to be finished so I did not contact them for a few years after the initial payment was sent via Paypal. Sadly I don't have a screenshot of said payment since I didn't think I'd need one.

They never once contacted me about my commission and suddenly disappeared from FA, leaving a giant list of waiting commissioners behind. I knew no other way to contact them, so I waited and gave them the benefit of the doubt. At some point they returned, saying they were sorry and they would pick up the outstanding commissions but then they disappeared again. They had at least 2 people trying to manage their commissions as kind of a 'secretary' so far as far as I know but this also did not work out.

2 years ago they returned to FA again, asking for commissioners to contact them, so I did - here is the note I sent and their reply . I was hoping they'd work through their old list then but as far as I know not much progress has been made. They were inactive again for some time after that.

In March this year I sent a mail to the mail address they left on their Journal, asking for a refund (I assumed it had been 4 years when it had been 6 to 7 years of a wait already). I never got a reply.

They took (and keep taking) new commissions via Twitter and at cons, some of which have been completed and some that seem to have been added to their list. I've seen AB posts of their more recent commissions. They also do a lot of adopts and by now I don't think I'll ever see my money again.

I don't recommend commissioning this artist.

You're definitely not the first one to have problems with doing business with Vani. A quick search on Artists Beware tells you a lot about their work ethic. I myself have attempted to get a refund on a piece I commissioned back in February 2016, but with no such luck.
They really had another secretary thing going on back then as well? Same thing happened just a few months ago, but the journal was deleted recently. The secretary didn't seem to have reached out to many of Vani's commissioners at all anyway.
I really hope we and everyone else who are waiting get what we've paid for in the end. I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with them.

I am not a 3-year person, but one from last year. I wanted to ask if your name was on her to-do list?

She has been working on her stuff as of recent, so I wanted to ask if you'd seen it or not.

mod note
Please use "they/ them" when referring to Vani and not "she/her".

Thank you.

I linked their to-do list down at "Proof" and also added a screencap of my name there

No problem.

And I saw, and understood the beware, but I also guess I am a bit more hopeful in the case of you getting it because they have been working rather hard with finishing their pieces they do owe.

Considering everthing, they are knocking out good chunks of art at a time. Hopefully yours will be up soon for completion.

I hope you keep us updated on the status of your commission. It's true, Vani has been consistently putting out art recently, but so far it's only been for a few months. It's a good start, but this has happened in the past. To show they really are serious about getting their act together, they're going to have to keep it up for a prolonged period of time.

Do not use Vani's RL name in this comm as that isn't what they do business by.

Also use "they/them" so using "she/her" in this comm is also not allowed.

I'm screening your comment. Do not delete.

You're welcome to repost with respectful changes.

Everytime I see Vani's name on here I hope it's good news, I'd love to get more art from them, but it's too risky. I'm sorry, OP :(

I'm sorry to hear you've been waiting a long time too. I commissioned them around that time as well (2010-2011) for a sketch and still haven't received it or a refund.

I'd have to go through my paypal statements as proof but the initial notes were lost when FA crashed a couple years ago unfortunately.

I hope they resolve this soon and people receive what is owed.

6 or 7 years is just ridiculous for just one $50 bust/waist-up commission.

About the only thing I ever bought from Vani is their werewolf base.

Echoing what Neonr0se says, I hope this gets resolved. Who knows when Vani would eventually get their act together.

Uhhhhh, did anyone else notice this on their Trello...?:

So basically, you have the option to paid MORE money for a commission you already paid for that you never received?

I was looking and that and hoping someone else would comment on it. Absolutely terrible to further profit off people they owe over a period of 7 years, I'm... actually kind of floored by the audacity.

You charge a rush fee when you're doing a rush job. After 7 years of waiting and poor business ethics, you shouldn't have to pay to encourage them to do the job they said they would do.
Sep. 28th, 2017 04:20 am (UTC)
Yeah, dare I say it comes off kind of...sleazy???

I mean, they're the one's who dropped the ball and inconvenienced all of these people by not doing the job they were paid to do. They are supposed to be making this up to their customers, not trying to wring more money out of these people, who, by the way, are completely justified in feeling ripped off.

Sadly, given how their fans seem totally willing to forgive them simply because they have pretty art, I imagine there will be a few people who will take them up on that offer.

This this this, yowza. I'd be pretty upset if I were waiting x amount of months/years for a piece only to see others bumped up ahead of me because they forked over the extra money. This is in extremely poor taste.
Sep. 28th, 2017 07:16 pm (UTC)
I hadn't seen this before and dang... that's just.. I don't even know hiw to respond to this.
I know they might be tight on money (at least they've always said they were) but this is still a pretty bad way to deal with things like this :(
Sep. 29th, 2017 02:47 pm (UTC)
Yeah no, that's a really crummy way to rob their already scammed commissioners out of more money.

Honestly, like what Whoop_zi says, if I were to wait so many months/years for art I paid Vani for, I'd be so mad/miffed to see that they bumped other commissioners ahead of me for paying an extra percentage.

Beware forever warranted!
Sep. 29th, 2017 03:47 pm (UTC)
It looks like at least one person took them up on that offer. There is a Due By: 11/1 on one of the lists.

I'm baffled that their fans aren't more put off by this behavior.

I'm surprised to be honest. They seem rather popular, and not only that, quite bold as an artist. A recent auction they made, they priced a "delux" ref/design pack to $800.

Now, I never bash ANY artist for how they price their art. And I know "artists can price how they want" because it's their life job. However, I've seen very talented artists that have their packs at least at $300. $800 sounds like the price for a fursuit head or something like that...

EDIT: Also, why didn't you get a refund after about 1-3 months? Artists normally have a 4-6 week turnaround, so not refunding doesn't exactly make sense.

Because this was back in 2010 and I was but a wee bab back then and pretty new to commissioning stuff.
Also, as I stated I am very patient with commissions.

It's been a while since we got the "To Be Resolved" update. Did Vani come through?
Nov. 2nd, 2017 01:47 am (UTC)
i've been waiting for roughly 7 years as well (journal was deleted, notes were lost, etc.) so i'm sorry to hear this is continuing, and has happened to others. i have given up hope of receiving my artwork, but i am happy to hear you are in contact. i hope you receive your art soon.
