Beware Senpai/Wildfluffytoast

WHO: Wildfluffytoast/Senpai/

WHERE: FA: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/wildfluffytoast

WHAT: $10 fullbody shaded piece

WHEN: March 1, 2017

EXPLAIN: So I commissioned Senpai March 1st after one of her friends I was watching posted a journal about her offering cheap fullbodies and I thought it was a good deal. I commissioned two pieces. A two character for $10 and a three character for $15 for a total on $25. I sent my payment and on the third I received the two-character piece. Though it wasn’t the pose that I had asked for, I informed her on this and she agreed to redraw it once her other commissions were finished and to remind her.

On the 14th of March after her commission list was empty I did remind her like she asked me to do. I resent both refs and a pose example of what I was wanting. I waited about a month before asking for an update In April. The message was read, but never replied to. Following that I sent another message on May 1st and waited for a bit before messaging her on Facebook May 4th. (I realized a typo in the facebook message. I meant to say she haven’t replied.) I was told the line art was done and the piece would be finished in a bit. A 2 weeks later my May 1st note on FA finally got a reply informing me of a lost in the family and of her job.

Fast forward to June 23rd. I had gone onto Senpai’s FA page after some time and saw that she had not only made a ych, sold it, and completed it, but also done two pieces of personal art. Was a little annoyed with that seeing as how the ych was done it 3 days, but I was waiting for months. So I messaged her for an update on my redraw and got a reply on the 24th.

I’m not trying to be mean or an asshole. I understand that she recently had someone close to her pass away and I can understand needing time to grieve. I’m just seriously annoyed. I did ask for a certain pose which the artist admits to misunderstanding and agreed to redraw, but it is going into the 5th month since I paid her and she has to me the line are for the redraw is done, but I haven’t seen that or any other progress, yet she has now opened commissions for both art and fursuits.

Edit: I had a few people comment about my wording for the pose so I'm posting a screencap here. Also please know that these are the artist's actually prices just prices she had for a sale to earn quick money for an emergency.

UPDATE: So I decided to ask for an update on the redraw. This is the response I got: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2gjwor6g8riwoza/Screenshot_20170809-225305.jpg?dl=0
I can only assumed she lied when she said she did the line art. Both annoyed and not really surprised.

Reply I got today: https://www.dropbox.com/s/45zewd57geo117b/Screenshot%20%2850%29.png?dl=0

So either she lied or she lost it like she said, but only ask for the refs after I asked about an update. Annoyed either way.

FINAL UPDATE: So Senpai found the beware I made against her and a few hours later I received my art. Only with one thing. She saved the file at herestupidass. To that she tried to play it off as it just being a silly name and that she does it with all her files.

Hmm... Technically, when you pointed out the wrong pose, you clearly stated "but this is fine" which meant accepting the piece as it was. The artist then offered to redraw it because of her mistake. Now, ignoring a client for a month after making that promise is certainly unacceptable behavior, but I'm not certain she actually owes you the redraw after you accepted it to begin with.

As for personal art over commissions, even including YCHs. When I get depressed, I just want to do my own thing and not have to worry about what other people want. I can get away with that with personal or YCH stuff, because I've got all the control over it aside from a small part of the YCH. (Character designs.) So her posting that stuff doesn't mean she's purely avoiding your art.

Definitely not good to avoid clients and she should be updating regularly if things go wrong. I'd also highly suggest she start giving WIPs. Same to OP to request at least sketches before things progress. It would have avoided this whole mess.

Truth be told I've never been in a situation so I thought I really didn't have much of a choice. Really wasn't until after the fact after talking with a few friends some one which are artists and advice post that I realized I should have asked for a redraw.

Also I am okay with artists wanting to do personal art here and there. It was just that I hadn't heard anything in a while and happened to see that she's has finished other art despite saying that she had mine lined out.

But yeah I've been asking for wips whenever I commission art now.

Since she didn't do the pose you paid her to do, you are completely in the right to ask for what you paid for: a redraw. I was only pointing out that in the message, you did accept it, so this time it might end up as a learning experience and leave it at that.

Hopefully this issue won't come up again.

I'm a little confused, you never actually show where you asked for that specific pose. Depending on how you phrased it what you wanted may not have been obvious. Though the artist did offer to redo it themselves so they must have felt they made a mistake.

Yeah I posted an edit since some mentioned my wording.

Well I don't know what you ended up getting but I would say that "presenting" is a niche jargon term. There's nothing in your description that really tells the artist that the characters are showing their butts if they aren't familiar with it. "Bending over" could equally mean a front view. I would suggest being more explicit if the pose is very important to you, and/or including a picture example of the kind of pose you are wanting. If you want the focus of the picture to be butts, I feel like "butts" should be in the description somewhere.

Now I can't really say that's what happened here or not, its very possible the artist just forgot to double check the description you have and thought they had remembered it.

edit: Sorry I should also mention that something like "presenting" is a word that makes some sense in plain english, so an artist unfamiliar with it would also be unlikely to google it. And if you did google it, you probably would just get the normal definition.

Even if you do know the term you can present breasts as well by bending over. The "panties" thing is the only real clue you wanted a butt pose, though in my experience it isn't unusual for commissioners to give information on stuff that wouldn't be seen in the pose they want. I'd usually ask some followup questions in that case, but I can see how someone could take it for granted.

Since she did offer to redraw, I can see why you felt like you didn't confirm it (if you did, may want to add it in) with her that yes you did want it. Even then, when she found out that yes you did want it, she still took quite a while. She had a lot of time of redoing it until her relative's death in April.

Holy crap, that artist is severely underselling their work. In my opinion, 5 months for such a low priced commission isn't that drastic. It's like that old "Cheap, Fast, Good. You can only pick two" idea: http://destylio.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/GOOD-FAST-CHEAP-01-963x1024.jpg

I see a bit of fault on both sides here.
I don't see where you asked for a specific pose in your notes - had you made it clear what you'd wanted in your description of the commission before hand?
If you did tell her what you wanted and she didn't follow through, then yes I would be annoyed too! but your response to her kinda implies that "this isn't what I asked for, but I am happy with what you've already done", so even though she may have said she'd redraw it, she may be under the impression that you were happy with the commission anyway and this was just going to be a goodwill extra - ergo: not top priority

Agreed, she really needs to up those prices.

Since I have a few people mention the wording of how I asked for the pose I posted an edit. Also those were only the prices she had for a quick sale for emergency money.

Just as a rule of thumb, and I feel like we've all been guilty of this before, but it's best to avoid buying emergency commissions for reasons like this. The prices are almost always undercut to the point that you may never get your piece.

I feel like emergency commissions should really cost more by the logic that it's going to be more difficult to work around and cover an emergency.
