SilverDeni: Owed art-trade

WHO: SilverDeni

WHERE: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/SilverDeni http://silverdeni.deviantart.com , trade was agreed on in a stream

WHAT: A very long overdue two-character art trade

WHEN: The stream where we talked about a trade was sometime in December 2012, I don't have an exact date saved anywhere though. Sent notes to ask about the trade during the years, it's 2016 now and I have yet to receive even a sketch.

PROOF: Notes/replies about the trade (I'm both Johis & Lhuin in these):
Some notes/replies on FA after I sent her the finished painting. Hope these make sense, I'm honestly a bit confused with my inbox/outbox especially as it's been so long but basically I sent her the link to the finished painting, we talked about if the characters in her half of me and my partner's characters would be in anthro or feral form and she said she wants to make a speedpainting video of it.

The last one was in May and I was feeling pretty hopeful after that (as you might be able to tell, I honestly thought I might finally see some work), but again, 7 months have passed and that was the last I heard of the whole thing. I never saw any of the attempts she mentions here.

Now these are actually screenshots I found someone else had taken of the comments I've left on her page and her reply to me (so the red circles are not by me). It was mentioned in an issue unrelated to our trade itself that I stumbled upon but just thought it was interesting someone else had noticed it. The last one was a reply to a comment I made on her FA page just asking about the trade but I didn't save it:
http://orig08.deviantart.net/0dbd/f/2016/005/d/1/deni1_by_lhuin-d9mtxf9.png I saw someone else had a similar issue so I jumped in to ask about mine
http://orig12.deviantart.net/751e/f/2016/005/3/b/deni2_by_lhuin-d9mtxey.png She mentions a sketch here but I never saw it

Sadly I've already removed the image from my FA gallery but here's proof of the date I made it:
And an email where I sent the full res to her (2nd of January 2013):

EXPLAIN: I went to watch a stream SilverDeni was holding in late 2012 (like I said I don't have any proof of this date anymore and didn't think of saving any screenshots of this). She asked me for a trade and I was happy to accept as I liked her work. I made my own trade part shortly, but since then I've just been waiting and waiting for her half and every time I ask I just get a new estimate of when it'll be done and/or reasons she hasn't been working on it, but then that new estimated time of completion passes and I hear nothing until I ask again.

I've been asking about the trade quite a few times during the years and have yet to seen anything at all, not even a sketch.
I didn't spend any money on this, but I did spend quite a lot of time on the drawing and the experience has left a bad taste in my mouth as I was really excited about the trade - and the fact that most if not all the contact about this has been initiated by myself.

I'm not expecting to see any work anymore, all my attempts to ask about it just end up in another empty promise. I know she's been busy with school etc. but has been doing plenty of personal art and other work. So just posting this as a heads up I guess. I'm kind of past the point of caring now when it comes to getting the art itself, but I just found the whole experience really unprofessional.
I might have been a bit too forgiving in some notes as I really did want the trade and didn't want things to go sour. I was thinking of giving her a final nudge about it but I don't think it would have done any good based on the 3 years of communication (or lack thereof) and I'm a bit tired of hearing more empty promises.

Howdy! Looks like your LJ cut is broken. You can fix it by moving the closing tag to the end of your post.

Fixed! (and fixed a little typo I saw as well that was bothering me haha)

This isn't surprising coming from her. Sadly she's starting to become more and more known for overdue worked. I had to threaten an AB post on her for me to get my commission done. Sadly I think she's dug herself too deep a whole to get out of with all these commissions and what not. I don't think she's even active on the sites anymore from what I've seen.

3 years for her end of the trade is just ridiculous. But then again, I'm not surprised to hear that. I was lucky to get a refund from her years ago as she never got around to that peek-a-boo icon I paid her for.

Basically going to go with what everybody else is saying and say 'not surprised'. It's almost like an Easter egg hunt of discovering people who Deni owes. I remember alarm bells ringing when I came across a fan who she owes SEVEN pieces to. :(

I commissioned Deni back in April 2013 (an flat character piece that came with an icon). The icon was finished quickly but she didn't finish the main commission until October 2014, and it was only because I had to hound (no pun intended) her bimonthly and request updates. Sometimes, she would send me a sketch, but I suspect they were quickly done to keep me satisfied as she never got any further than beyond the sketch stage. Each sketch would also be something completely different from what she had previously sent me. I would approve each one, but then she'd change it again.

That is until she actually finished it. However, I was not happy with how I, as a customer, had to keep up communications. Not once did Deni contact me with any updates. I had to do all the footwork. In the meantime, she continued to do personal art and she was also doing tons of gift art for a friend on FA at the same time. I was only notified of the latter because a customer complained to a Tumblr blog I was following and I went through her FA gallery. It was frustrating to note that she had the time to do these pieces but not the time to work on my commission, or even maintain communication throughout the two years she took.

It's also a small nitpick but she also did not follow what I had asked for and simply did whatever with my character. Small criticism because I got what I had paid for (as opposed to some of her other customers from 2012/13) but when somebody pays $60 for a commission, I think it's important to follow through with what the customer has requested, not do whatever is easiest without consulting the customer first.

I really hope you get your half soon, Johis. 3 years is just shocking for a trade. It's only just recently she's decided to get on with doing commissions from years ago sporadically, which may have something to do with several customers asking around on Twitter for updates. It saddens me that people have to outright chase her for just a mere update, especially when it seems she's moved past the stage of humouring them with numerous sketches.

edit: just reworded a few things that sounded confusing

Seconding this as I had an almost identical experience with her. She seems to have a perpetual backlog and it always ends up with the client chasing for contact. (edit: I just noticed that two clients of hers just recently posted the finished products of some Christmas YCH's that were sold in 2014.)

Her artwork is adorable and she's clearly very talented but her work ethic is, quite frankly, awful.

Sorry to hear about your experience(s) too. The worst thing about it is that this backlog is mostly hidden from public view and most people are unaware of it, so her reputation appears somewhat good when she puts out the occasional commission, even though the client ordered it so many years ago. Customers come out the woodwork to bug her occasionally but it's either out of people's sight (i.e. on Twitter) or it escalates into an argument (like in the screenshots) and is promptly hidden.

That brings me to her attitude, which is rather awful as well. It's got to the point where the artwork I've gotten from her is sullied by it. I was never on the receiving end of her backlash but to see others be on the receiving end just for enquiring about an overdue trade is disgusting.

She's quick to use university as an excuse and that anybody who says it's not much of an excuse is unqualified to tell her so because they're 'young'uns' who don't attend university, or do graphic design. I also studied graphic design and I still managed to find time to do personal art on top of commissions. I don't know about anybody else here but I now find this kind of pretentiousness off-putting and, like somebody said in the screenshot, potential customers would not appreciate being spoken down to by somebody they've entrusted with money.

I've commissioned many artists, some of which work merciless hours and they've always come up with amazing results in a timely manner. Lord knows how Deni is going to handle her commissions business once she finds professional work, because it's an all new ball game from a degree.

Oh jeeze, yeah. I saw the "young'uns" comment and cringed hard.
Jan. 11th, 2016 02:46 am (UTC)
Ooh, sad but, this is not the first time I hear about her doing what she wanted with the commissioner's character instead of what she was paid to; one of these situations was with http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11191305/
Some comments are now hidden, but basically the person comissioned SilverDeni for a picture of their character with a videogame theme, Silverdeni agreed, but then she made the BG a different thing than agreed to because she thought a black background would look better than what was requested... which kinda defeated the idea of the videogame theme the commissioner wanted.

Oh God, I remember that.

I think I recall Crystal asking for a while about the commission's progress. When Deni finally put up a sketch, Crystal had to correct her on the way she'd drawn the gun and remind her that she wanted her drawn with a gun from a particular video game. Like you said, the comments are gone now but I do remember seeing them.

Deni's style and manner of drawing tends to get sloppy with commissions and such too, I think. Her personal art looks like legit effort has gone into it but I've noticed a trend with owed work, where the style has abruptly changed to something different or everything just looks lazily done (i.e. inking). So, this kind of laziness doesn't surprise me either.

It's a shame. She's really talented and takes plenty of commissions but really only seems to put out art of her and her boyfriend's sonas. Hope you get what you're owed OP.
Jan. 10th, 2016 11:56 pm (UTC)
Tell her to either pony up her half, or she owes you money for your half as a 2-character commission.

Oh boy, she's used the ol' college excuse with arts? That means she can't balance projects at all. I took four classes and it was projects after projects. It's doable, so she can suck it up and do the work.

It just boggles my mind how these artists think this is acceptable time and time again.

I've had issues with her in the past as well. I asked for a stream commission back in 2013.

I saw her draw the commission, and that was fine. But she took a good 2 weeks before she sent it to my mail in full resolution. She said it is a lot of work to apparently resize it and crop it... which is ridiculous.

After a lot of hounding and asking I finally got the art.

I adore her art, I truly do.. I just wish she could take it easy with the attitude and the constant defence and excuse of college, when she at the same time pour art to her boyfriend and commissions for her close friends.

This honestly isn't surprising coming from her. I got the joy of being in contact with her personally. There was a lot of drama, frankly.

Me and my ex had donated well over $100 to her and her bf in hopes they would be able to see each other (being a sucker for long distance, as we had experienced it as well), and she had promised a few sketches and whatnot in return. Never saw a thing from her, but rather a ton of her own personal work. I don't remember what exactly happened, but we had a falling out with her, and it took ages to get a refund from them.
