Beware-- Elixirmutt on FurAffinity

WHO: Elixirmutt on furaffinity/weasyl

WHERE: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/elixirmutt

WHAT: A 10$ colored sketch commission. The piece was not finished because after a wip shot being provided, I was blocked.

EXPLAIN: Elixirmutt contacted me on furaffinity.net via note asking for a colored sketch+ background work (10$) of their character.
Reference was sent, and days after, I send the work in progress in case Elixirmutt wanted any changes, since the reference provided was not completely clear and I didn't want the finished work to look unsatisfying if possible.
The wip image given was this. http://i.imgur.com/T14kFaJ.png
The note with it shows up as read but without answer, so I sent a reminder five days after in case the note had gotten lost or it was forgotten. It went ignored as well.

Today I decide to upload an adoptable batch to my side account, Species, and to my surprise, I get a +watch notification from Elixirmutt there, showing that the account was active and in use.
Minutes after, I attempt to send a note to inform that I do not mind if they are not interested on completing the transaction, but that I would appreciate a word or some info on it.

When I attempt to send the note, I notice the +watch has been removed (My side account states my main on its profile, they saw the connection?), and my account(s?) is now blocked so I'm now not able to communicate.

I'm a bit upset because this is potentially a waste of time for the artist, especially because the WIP shot of their character was given but no payment was received, and in case Elixirmutt were not satisfied with the WIP shot, I do not think the correct way to deal with it is to ignore and block the artist.

I wanted to let Elixirmutt know that I intend to reuse the sketch so it's not entirely a loss of time and that the commission is terminated, so there's no need for them to complete the transaction since it seems they do not wish to. I wouldn't have had a problem with that in first place, I understand if they were unhappy with the WIP shot or anything like that, but I don't appreciate being ignored and blocked through a business transaction without giving any kind of communication.

Just a little mod note.
Hello! Just wanted to let you know your LJ cut isn't working right. Feel free to edit your post to fix that when you get the chance. Thanks! :)

Re: Just a little mod note.
Oh, thanks for letting me know, hopefully it is working now!

Firstly I'd suggest getting payment beforehand before you do any work (it's always easier to refund the money than try to get money when the person doesn't want to pay), and honestly just reuse the sketch and if they pay later, send the money back to them if you so feel.
They've obviously flounced from the commission and makes them look like they only wanted free art, so you really don't owe them anything at this point. I'd also keep an eye if they try to add your sketch to their gallery etc.

Thanks for the advice, I've modified my TOS now so I'll ask for payment upfront from now on.

I've noticed they've been commissioning other artists sucessfully on both FA and weasyl (same name), so if they're willing to pay for other pieces... I'm guessing they just didn't like my WIP? I don't know haha. I just hope they don't do this to anyone else, it can be really bothersome.

Yeah that sounds odd :I
I don't know, maybe they hit a sore spot financially and rather than admit it, run? Sometimes the people who seem reliable are the ones to flunk out, I've sadly noticed.

reuse the sketch and if they try to upload it report them.  sucky situation for sure

Agreeing with Vauvakolibri, you owe them nothing. If you want to re-use the sketch for someone else or even sell it for a YCH kind of thing you are definitely within your rights.

Many artists ask for payment upfront for sketches and other small work. You can use this sketch for YCH auction, for example. Anyway, it's a weird situation, I like the sketch and don't know why he/she doesn't.

Thank you so much!
I'll definitely ask for payment upfront from now on.

By the way, your avatar is incredibly pretty! Do you mind if I ask who is the artist?

After case when I did very detailed sketch and commissioner ignored me without paying me (other persons said to me that commissioner doesn't need commissions with her old fursona! (sic!)), I decided to take payment upfront for small commissions. Sometimes people were angry at me, because I'm very slow person and have full-time job and studies, but I didn't lose money because of such commissioners.

I hope you find a good buyer for the sketch, it's super cute and $10 is crazy cheap for such a cute sketch. In fact, odds are you're gonna trade up customer-wise when (not if) it sells.

Actually, it seems that I did haha. :)

And thank you, I really appreciate the kind words! ♥

That's ridiculous behavior considering they could have just as easily admitted that they were no longer interested, rather than blocking you and essentially wasting even more of your time. If you're planning on reselling the sketch, would you mind hitting me up on FA? I'm potentially interested! ^^
Feb. 28th, 2014 04:37 am (UTC)
Yeah, I agree, I don't see how ignoring and blocking someone would a better option than saying "Sorry, this isn't what I was looking for" or "Apologies, I'm not interested in having it finished, is there any other way we could make this work"?
But ahh well! I'm just left wondering why haha.

Ah, I'm very happy you're interested! You're pyroar on FA, right? I'll be sending you a note. (:
