I need some advice..

Some time ago, a commissioner paid for a tail and ear set from me. They asked if they could pay with a money order since paypal was not an option. I said that's fine.

I received the money order, and it was made out to "Mander's Fur Shack", and not to me personally. Therefor, no matter where or who I went to, they would not cash it.

I'm not sure what to do. He paid $50 for a tail and ear set, and I feel so insanely guilty about all of this. I have 'some' fur to make it for him, but the fact of the matter is; I'll be doing it as a courtesy, since the money order was not usable.

I would personally recommend simply sending it back to him (so he can see it wasn't cashed) and telling him he needs to put your real name on a new one. Don't work without pay because of a mistake on his behalf. If he has it, he should be able to get it exchanged/refunded.

I would also reconsider taking money orders in the future. It's easy for lots to go wrong, as you've come to find.

This. It's not your fault you can't cash the money order. He needs to correct this before he gets anything from you.

Absolutely.

I mean, it's not as if you told him to do it that way, right? I recently had to make someone cover for their boo-boo in a similar situation, I also felt crappy for doing it but they were very understanding. Most people are, I wouldn't sweat it.

Yeah he should be able to cash it back to himself if you send it back, in which case he could send you a new one. He should only lose the fee.

A long time ago I was sent an improper amount MO for an Ebay sale. Until you cash it, a MO can be refunded by the sender with the same post office is was sent.

Let them know this, be polite when you send it back. Tell them to take the STUB they have from buying it and have it refunded and resent, since they won't be out any cash if they have it refunded and resent.

If you told this buyer the correct real life name to send it to and they ignored it, have them cover the shipping of a new one, if you did not, offer to cover the shipping for a new MO, that's just my view and policy, your mileage may vary,

Pretty much this, if you have the money order number and/or the receipt he should be able to get it refunded if it hasn't been cashed.

He should be able to take the money order back and exchange it for one with the proper name on it, so send it back to him and explain the situation to him, and tell him you can't do any work until you are paid.

As a last resort, if you have a friend who is in management at a small business (or just someone who has authority to do cash transactions at said business), just give them the money order, write "Mander's Fur Shack" on the back of it, and ask them in a week (to allow the money order to clear) to give you the amount of the money order back in cash. As long as it is endorsed on the back by the same name as it was written out to, any bank will take it as part of a deposit of one of their regular accounts. I'm surprised a check cashing place (you know, those places that say "we cash all checks") would not take a money order, as they're guaranteed to get the funds as long as the money order itself is not fake. Sure, you'll take a hit in the fees to cash it, but it gives you funds now, rather than the promise of someone to "maybe" send you funds in a form you can use once you mail the money order back to them. Good luck with what you decide to do.
