WHO: Squared-Away (Commissioner)

WHERE: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/squared-away/

: Digital Artwork of his pony character, Squared-Away, in knight's armor.

WHEN: January 23rd, 2013 was the initial e-mail, and when the money was sent.

I was encouraged to make this post, wasn't sure if something like this would warrant a beware. As said in the e-mail, Squared-Away commissioned me to draw his pony character in the links posted in the aforementioned message. He wanted his character's armor drawn in a certain way, which I followed. He wanted his character drawn with the background he linked, which I followed. However, he never specified to me if the background/setting was supposed to be in a daytime setting, or nighttime setting. So, I went with a night time setting:

Commission: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10295327/

His initial description when he first posted was that I should have "asked him what time of day he wanted the setting as". I wasn't aware that I was supposed to ask him that, and I was just following his directions that he gave me in his first e-mail. Regardless, he left a passive-aggressive comment about it, how he wasn't happy about the commission, I wanted to leave a comment to resolve this, but, I decided not to.

There was a period of time, where I was suspended from FurAffinity over another matter that doesn't pertain to this situation, but I also had a backlog before he asked me for a commission that I was still working on. So I was still working on my backlog, as well as his commission during my suspension, and I've been trying to keep contact with all of my clients as well, to assure them that I am still working on their product.

This was my tumblr post, which is also related to the incident, but it was in my personal blog, and I was just venting some frustration. I wasn't insulting him, or anything of the sort, just expressing my negative feelings about the matter.

So, I find out sometime later, that he changed his description of the commission:

To where he was making it seem like the commission was a waste of money, even though he gave me the thumbs up to finish the commission, AND when he asked for a refund, I was going to give his money back via a partial refund, and give him the unfinished sketch as well. This was a mistake on my part, as I had to withdraw money from my bank to give it to him, so I didn't have money on my paypal account at the time. Note, I never spent his money, only moved it, and it would have taken a few days to move money back to my paypal account; that's why there was a delay.
He changed his mind about the refund, and wanted me to finish it, which I did. Now, he's calling me a bad artist, and trying to damage my reputation by calling me such, and leaving a message as such on the front of his FA page, seen here:

The only thing I couldn't do was the Gothic type, because...as embarrassing as this sounds, I don't have gothic type on my computer, and I don't know how to install new fonts on it. x_x I've never had the need to do so.

FFF I love customizing my fonts, so here's this quick link for installing them!
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/install-or-uninstall-fonts WINDOWS
http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/install-fonts-mac/1679/ MAC

Hope that helps for the future at least. :>

Have you contacted FA staff asking if they can have the slander removed from their artist comments?

Beware well warranted, I wouldnot want to accept money from this person.

One up that nonsense of this guys' get the pic pulled down completely if he's only going to leave it in the gallery to sass off like that with a pass-agg attitude.
Apr. 18th, 2013 11:27 pm (UTC)
This sounds like a good idea to me, no need to provide him the image if he's going to use it against you.
Apr. 18th, 2013 09:35 pm (UTC)
I am planning to do so in a few moments, I just didn't want to do it right away because they may erase what he's actually written before I get my evidence screencapped.

Ah, makes sense.

It's complete bull he obviously just left that stuff up to be a jerk, I really dislike when customers do that.
I've had bad experiences with someone I purchased from but I'd not put like "DON'T COMMISSION THIS PERSON" in my info box. That's like the people who write a public list of who they have blocked on FA, just drama mongering.

I am surprised the other artist he is slandering doesn't know about this as well.

This is really horrible :/ I'm sorry this has happened.
Kayla, having seen this fellow's behavior, I can tell you your standing in TrustedArtists will not be affected by this situation, in the event that we get a removal notice for you. I can already see that happening and having seen this, I won't have it approved.

That's truly a weight off of my shoulders, thank you very much.

On the topic of fonts, I like to use a free font site called Urban Fonts http://www.urbanfonts.com/free-fonts.htm ... You can find almost anything there, and they're all free to use. They install really easily, you double click the ttf file, and windows will open a dialog box showing the font examples. I'm not sure how to install them in linux or on a mac.

It's frustrating when people give a bad review, after encouraging work continue on a piece.

Adding to this. Most of them are free for PERSONAL USE ONLY.

tealmoon is right, They are mostly free for personal use only. Another site that posts many royalty-free fonts is dafont.com
Apr. 19th, 2013 03:32 am (UTC)
fontsquirrel.com is another, and they are COMMERCIAL use as well!
Apr. 19th, 2013 03:58 am (UTC)
Seconding this! Each font has a legend indicating what it is licensed to be used for.

http://www.blambot.com/ Try this as well if you self publish or do small print publishing the free fonts are free.

I've ran into situations like this early on when I was trying to commission people, it's one of the reasons I email updates on the commission in different stages of completeness.

Baiting and switching commission information is pure drama mongering though, either that or trying to get a free commission.

If I were you I would keep the money for the labor you already done, it's not like you didn't do any service and you did follow his directions. If the client wants to change their whole commission like that they should expect to pay for the extra work.

Wow I don't know what to say here. From their submission description it almost feels like they were expecting some drama, then when you were completely professional from start to finish they just made up they're own to try and garner attention.

Beware well warranted and I'd contact FA staff about their baseless call outs.
Apr. 19th, 2013 01:28 am (UTC)
This makes it really hard for me to not break the "name-calling" rule like you wouldn't believe, because I got a few choice words to say about this guy.

I hope the admins side with you on this one.

Check what applies:
[] Nothing of value was lost.
[] Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out.
[] Someone call the WAAAHmbulance.
[] BAAW!

And installing fonts is easy; download font, drop file into fonts folder. Tadaa!
But I think it's a nice drawing, and he could have asked you to change the time of day if he could have only overcome his terminal case of passive aggressiveness, alas..
Apr. 19th, 2013 01:29 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I would have changed it, but he didn't ask.
Apr. 19th, 2013 02:20 pm (UTC)
I sent in a ticket last night about the call out, just waiting for a response now.
Apr. 20th, 2013 09:59 pm (UTC)
-- I think they have deleted all the comments and userpage description? Posting the caps would be nice

-- this guy sounds way too picky and then dramatastic, but I think it's a really bad idea to say negative things about commissioners in public, unless you are blacklisting them and trying to warn others. I am talking about that journal you made - if you felt the need to say something I think you would have been better served discussing it with him privately /or/ posting it to a private journal if you just wanted to vent.

Just noticed, editing the post to put the caps in
