Going to keep this anonymous and all, just wondering what I should do about it.

I had someone buy a YCH of mine and found out the character they linked to me they apparently share with someone else. The two people agreed the character wouldn't be used in anything 18+, but my YCH was 18+. I'm wondering if I should proceed and finish the commission(they asked it would be kept private) or maybe not even bother with it and refund them? Is it really my business? I don't really want to poke my nose in there but at the same time as an artist I really don't want something backfiring on me somewhere down the line.

Thanks a lot ahead of time. :3

Private commissions like that rarely stay private. And character sharing like that leaves me 100% leery. Refund and get out.

^ ALL of this. There are so many things that could go wrong with a "shared" character. In fact I've never heard of that before.

Save yourself the headache, refund, and get yourself out of this situation stat.

shared characters are more common in roleplay circles.

i know back on furcadia there was a huuuuuge thing about 'sharing' alts for roleplaying. but a lot of the time those shared alts wound up a whole mess when the two people sharing had a falling out. probably most didn't, but i did see a lot of shared alt drama going on.

so, it CAN be done. and done civilly. but it's best to just get all owners of the character to weigh in.

Ah, I guess I learn something new every day!
Still, in a commission situation like this, it can get very tricky- I would just rather avoid it altogether, haha.

I have a pair of friends who Share a roleplay character, because it's the child of two of their characters. It works out pretty well, but since there are no images and such, and they talk everything through before hand.

i think most of the drama that i saw was less about the character and more about the account name. since you can resell furcadia accounts on another website for money, and their value is directly affected by the desirability of their name.

so...say your totally-not-sherlock fox boy you and your friend share for RP is on the username "sherlock"

but now one of the owners wants to sell sherlock since it's probably worth between 50-100$ at least

drama breaks out, arguments over who owns the design breaks out, etc etc.

Yea, I have seen that happen a loooot. It's why I just end up sitting on my names, even if I have friends who want to share. Because I know there's a chance I'll come back and I won't be able to log into Oktober again.

Augh. For a while I would have killed for Gray, spelled with an 'A', but I now use Blot as my ususal name on the internet, and I still have Graymalkin.

Poke your nose in there. At minimum, tell the winner they need to get permission from the person they share the character with, and have them contact you. This will backfire on you if the other person finds out about this commission, and you were aware of the terms.

Get permission or refund and get out. That's a really sketchy situation. I wouldn't want to work with that person if they're using a character in a way that isn't agreed upon with the other party.

DEFINATLY ask both owners, straight up, if its okay and lay out the details and concerns. A lot of issues have been cropping up of people stealing/using other character's in porn without other people's permission. It's straight up wrong.

So yes, to prevent heart-ache, either contact both people and make sure its okay, or get out of there as fast as you can.

i wouldn't do it unless the other owner approved. you can always just be up front telling the person this, and telling them the other owner needs to contact you first.

otherwise, you might be entering a potentially messy situation. for all you know, the two had a falling out and it could be kind of like a petty revenge or something. you don't wanna get mired in that. best to just get all parties to agree.

If you chose to fallow threw with the commission then I would either state that you need explicit written permission from all parties owning the character, or tell them they have to chose a character that is 100% their own.

If either of these options seem like they won't work well, then I'd just apologize and let them know you aren't comfortable with the situation, and refund them.

I'm in agreement with you, Chronidu.

I share a character with my boyfriend, I created it and he adds to the backstory and draws it too. It's kind of a collab thing, I guess?

Personally I would poke the co-owner and see if permission is granted, but that's me. I like to take that extra step to prevent a giant headache down the road.

Yeah, I'll be honest and say this situation doesn't really seem all that shady to me outside of the other owner possibly not knowing or wanting mature art done of a character they use.

I guess I'm just so used to creating and collaborating worlds/stories/characters with other artists that the idea of two people sharing a character doesn't seem out of the norm at all.

I really don't see any reason to be afraid of some drama explosion over asking for permission from both owners from what I'm reading here.

Thanks guys!

I sent them a note letting them know to ask the other person to note me if it's okay so I can continue. I also gave them a few other options too for their money if they don't just want a refund. Hoping it goes well but I believe it will.

Thanks so much!

It's gonna be your business when the drama starts :/
It's really shitty of that guy to put you in this situation.

I actually share a character, non rp ring with a friend of mine. Actually share 2 of em. Recently he got a commission from someone and they noted me about the partial ownership of the character ect an I went ahead and gave the go head on it.

Just message and ask. And make sure to get all the details the person wants out. If the 2nd owner doesn't want that, refund and go on your way. No point in getting mixed up in all that.

Seconding this entirely.

I have a few shared characters myself, and I would absolutely prefer to be informed if the co-owner were to commission art of them, both adult and otherwise. It's always better to be safe than sorry, OP!

This is resolved now, the other person that co-owns the character noted me and said it was all good.

Now to finish my commission lol.
