Beware: dogbreath

EDIT 2: 2/14/2012 - I have received my commission! (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7391530/
NSFW) Please mark this as resolved!

EDIT: 2/9/2012 - I have given Dogbreath a deadline of Feb. 13th. She has agreed to the date so hopefully I will see something soon!

Before I start, I want to let it known that the artist here, dogbreath, is a very sweet and polite artist. I really don't wish to give her a bad rep in any way, but I feel the beware is justified.

WHO: dogbreath on FA
http://www.furaffinity.net/user/dogbreath/

WHAT: A traditional adult piece, colored, 2 characters, no BG.

WHEN: I commissioned the piece back in April 2011. The piece was paid in full through PayPal. After everything was finalized, I received a sketch in May sent for my approval. I asked for a few minor changes, which I didn't receive until September. I approved the sketch and told her she was good to go. I waited again until November to contact her about my commission, where I was told that she needed to get new markers for inking. At this point, I assumed that it would be maybe another week before I saw any progress. This was the last time I've had any sort of contact. (I tend to wait at least a few weeks before contacting again.. I don't want to seem naggy.) The date of this note was November 20, 2011.

PROOF:

EXPLAIN: As I've said before, dogbreath is a very sweet person, and very polite to work with. I don't believe she has tried to scam me in any way, but I've become frustrated with how long my commission has been pushed back, and that she still takes commissions despite mine not being done. I have recently noted her, but I'm not sure if I should just wait it out, or ask for a refund.

Hopefully the caps are readable! Please let me know if they're not. I'm hoping to resolve this soon.

Six months is really not that long at all to wait for a commission.

While I agree that it's not the best business practice to take other customers ahead of previous, already paid up customers, I think you should perhaps note her again since it seems your most recent contact was in November. She should be finishing your piece before taking more work, but all artists work differently and I know some people have specific clauses on their ToS that things in their queue might not be worked on in a first come, first serve basis.

Not sure if this matters, but her TOS states that she gets commissions done usually within 3 weeks to a month. :]

... maybe if it's a fursuit commission or "old masters" style oil painting O-o

While you don't want to seem naggy, I think a better choice would have been to note her again after she said she needed to get new markers. I would have also waited to see her reply before posting here, but hey, that's me.

If you're honestly done, just ask for a refund. There's nothing wrong with being fed up with an artist's business practices, no matter how sweet and polite they are.

I hope she gets back with you soon, and that you both can work out something to your satisfaction very soon. :)

This. I personally would appreciate people contacting me with concerns before making a public thing about it, since it does sound like it could be resolved easily, (hopefully, anyways). Reading the notes, it sounds like you've only been asking for progress, not telling them how you feel about all this.

I actually got advice from a moderator before posting this, because I too was kind of iffy on the situation.

Yeah. I mean, the post is well-warranted because of the lack of communication- so I'm definitely not questioning its validity.

I just would have waited on this last note to confirm or deny any results before posting here. That's all I'm saying. :)

(Posting from the email version, so can't see if the situation is resolved or has action taken upon it ATM, so I hope good things come soon!!)

I would note her again to see the state of the commission. While I do, generally, agree that six months isn't that long, I understand how you feel and the jumping around in the queue would have driven me bonkers already.

So yes, please note her again to see the status. If you like, try to politely bring up your concerns. Perhaps she doesn't realize that this practice is frustrating.

Im just wondering if you have any sort of indication of turn around time - whether for yourself or how quickly she generally turns over commissions.

A lot of people here are saying that 6 months isn't too long, but it still strikes me as a while for a 2 character pin up, particularly when it's apparently still uninked.

I do want to chime in and say that waiting/checking back in about the pens might have been nice, but it's been almost a month since then...

Her TOS states that commissions generally take a few weeks to a month to complete. As I've said, she's been very polite about the whole thing, so no grudges or anything of that matter. :]

Okay, then yeah, 6 months without even inking is way long.

I agree, people are saying that isn't too long but I never take that long.

I agree with all that say contact her, but I must ask if you had any sort of prearranged time to have the commission finished? It may just be that she got bogged down when you wanted changes and decided to take on other work that flowed came a bit easier. Just express that you would like a definitive date for it to be finished.

I actually asked her to have it done by the 13th (for our anniversary), but I wasn't too picky because I agree, people get bogged down sometimes.

As in December 13th?

Oh no, the thirteenth of the month commissioned (May). Her TOS also states she'll do her best to get it done by a certain date, but as I said, I'm not particularly picky or naggy on that matter.

Whoa, what, that changes things, tbh! If I take something under a deadline, then it's a bit more serious if I go beyond it and we're talking months and months beyond it. You definitely need to be more firm about this.

Ahh well its definitely past the 13th. I would express a little more firmly that you want a due date or at least a partial refund since its taking longer than you wanted. Either way good luck to you

Just a quick "reply to all" as it seems a lot of you have the same concern, I spoke to a community moderator before posting this to get their opinion. :]

I have noted her back since November, telling her I understood but that's the last I heard from her.

Since a couple people have asked about it, you might want to edit your post to include her TOS's statement on turnaround. Sometimes those comments get lost and it's pretty important info!

Situation resolved
Would a mod please marked this as resolved?

I've spoken with dogbreath and we came up with the solution to make the commission digital instead of traditional. She has a much quicker turn-around with digital, and it's much less costly on her part. :]

Thanks a ton!

Re: Situation resolved
While another moderator put the resolved tag on, I took it off because I prefer to wait until you receive your art. Sadly, I've seen it all too often here in A_B where the artist gets back in touch but once again does not follow through.

I'm glad you two have worked out a compromise; please let me know when you receive your art and I will be glad to put the resolved tag up.
