Lost Contact: DevHalena ****RESOLVED****

Not exactly a beware but moreover a lost contact, more information is under the cut.

UPDATE: Artist finally contacted me via FA private message and informed me that she would be refunding me my money on Saturday. I'll create another update once the refund has been successfully completed by the artist.

UPDATE2: Artist has refunded me the full amount back to my paypal account.

WHO (ARTIST): DevHalena aka dev-dragon-bat [on dA].
LJ is: devhalena
FA is: DevHalena
dA is: dev-dragon-bat

WHERE: Transaction took place on an LJ community that promotes artist commissions called teenycom. The commission exchange between us can be viewed here:

WHAT: 100x100 digital icon. The details are all described in the link above.

WHEN: The confirmation of the commission was set up on October 20th, 2010.
Over a month had passed without any updates/information, so I decided to write the artist a Private Message on FA (November 30th) asking for any updates on the commission. After one more week had passed without any response from the artist I decided to copy & paste the Private Message again and send it, toward which she finally replied:

Please pardon my non-high-resolution screen cap.
The text is as follows:

[Me to Devhalena]

Hello [name omitted] a.k.a. Dev Halena,
I'm explorer_fam from both LJ and FA.
I had commissioned you for a glowy icon October 20th.

I tried to send you a Private Message on November 30th, one week ago, but still have not heard back from you.

Is there any news, updates, progress in your queue?

Also- if there is a better method of communication that I should be aware of for reaching you, please feel free to recommend such a resource.

Sorry, I've been pretty busy with work lately. I haven't been able to catch enough time to work on the icons, but I'm estimating New Year's at the latest. I'm actually working on getting back to the people who bought an icon to see what kind of compensation we can work out to make up for the long wait. I can also throw in a nice Sai sketch :) (Something like this:http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4675074/) Once again, I'm really sorry that you've had to wait so long.

Three months past after the Private Message was sent by the artist.
There were no results/WIP/updates/new estimated times of completion communicated from her.
I sent her another Private Message on FA to see if she was doing alright:

Again please forgive my low-res-screen cap. It reads:

Hello [name omitted] a.k.a. Dev Halena,
I'm explorer_fam from both LJ and FA.
I had commissioned you for a glowy icon October 20th, 2010.

It's been 3 months since I had last heard from you via Private Message,
so I thought I'd drop by and find out how you're doing so far and if you had any new estimated time of completions that I should be aware of? (I believe your last estimation was New Years of 2011)

Anywho, hope you're doing well. I'm loving a lot of the artwork that I've been noticing on your main page, the use of colors are absolutely beautiful! :3
Take good care, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Another nine days past without any response, so I copy & pasted the private message again voicing concern about the lack of contact.

It reads:

Hello [name omitted] a.k.a. Dev Halena,
I'm explorer_fam from both LJ and FA.
I had commissioned you for a glowy icon October 20th, 2010.

Wrote you a private message 9 days ago, but still have not heard back from you yet.
I also tried to write you a private message on LJ to try and get in contact with you.
Is there an alternative method of communication that works best for you?
Because it doesn't seem like FA or LJ are working as far as trying to reach you.

~ explorer_fam

I also sent this Private Message to her on LJ and dA in hopes to get a hold of her somewhere.
With still no response after eight days passing, I became really frustrated and decided to request a refund from the artist.

This one reads:

Request for Refund on Commission.
Sent By: explorerfam to DevHalena On: March 27th, 2011 01:46

Dear Devhalena,
I'm becoming very uncomfortable with the lack of communication regarding the commission that we set up in October. The last private message/update that I received from you was December 9th, 2010. In the time that has occurred in between that date, I have sent you messages on FA, LJ, and even dA trying to contact you for an update or new estimated time of completion but have not received any response.

At this point I would like to politely request a $10 refund for the October made commission. The paypal account was:
jjtschampa [at] gmail [dot] com

Please, please write back to me about this exchange, even if it is to confirm the refund.

PROOF: The original Teenycom post made by the artist and all of the comments can be found here:

Our exchange for the commission, paypal information, and paypal confirmation on my part:

My PayPal e-mail confirmation:

Here is an old FA journal entry written by the artist that has my username in her queue:

EXPLAIN: I have lost contact with the artist Devhalena and was wondering if anybody has any advice or help they could provide for this situation. The last update/estimated time of completion she sent me was December 9th, 2010. This estimated time of completion was set for January 1st, 2011 by the artist herself. I have tried sending her Private Messages on FA, LJ, and dA with no luck. I even gave her a shout on her FA page to see if I can could grab her attention. She's still favoriting artwork on FA constantly and has uploaded some personal artwork ever since the Teenycom post, so she's definitely alive and active on the internet.

I just can't seem to get a hold of her no matter what method I try!
Any advice on what I should do next would be appreciated! (For example if I continue to not hear from her and not receive a refund for a long period of time)

This is my first post on a_b and I'm hoping it will be my last. Except to post positive feedback on great artists!

Thank you so much for your attention.

I can say she's been working on these, as mine took quite some time, too. Maybe try her Twitter? It's odd that she's been so unresponsive, and I hope you get your art/refund. =<

She's devhalena on Twitter, too.

I saw yours! It was awesome!
Unfortunately I don't tweet. But I hold no criticism against those who do.

I'm kinda in the same boat you are (I had commissioned her via the same teenycom post). I had sent her a note back in January and got a reply a few days later, but haven't seen any progress of my icon since either.

She told me in that same note: "I'm expecting completion for all of them within the next 3-5 days." But I never got anything. So I too am wondering about what's up.

I'll try also sending her another note myself. :)

Coolness. I'll definitely leave any updates if I ever do get a hold of her somehow. :/

I just got a reply from her saying she'll be refunding people this coming weekend. :)

I received the same note as well.
I'll be updating this community entry further once the refunds have taken effect.

Sounds good to me!

I'm not a member of that community but you may want to show this to their mods so they know that someone in their community is stringing people along.

She has written an explanation here:

"I'm going to be issuing refunds this Saturday (April 2nd) to the people who purchased a Glowy Icon from me. I'm really sorry that I couldn't finish the icons, but to be honest, I lost interest."

While she is coming out now about her lost interest, it would've been better had she informed people sooner.

That, and contact them herself. They shouldn't' have to find her journal, especially when they commissioned her on another site. Seems this is a popular thing to do among artists.
Mar. 28th, 2011 01:43 pm (UTC)
As others have stated, she wrote a journal entry about what happened and what she is going to do about it.

Please tell us when she either gives you your art or your refund.

Sounds like life is kicking her pretty hard in the teeth and she is rather depressed about the whole thing but she is going to try to make it right.

Considering the unemployment rate in that area (I have two nieces who are looking for work in the same part of the country and they have their college degrees), I give what she said lots of credence.
