Crys the Hybrid

In April of 2010 I commissioned Crys the Hybrid for two full color digital commissions for two people who were at the time close to me. I had commissioned her right before the convention of Wild Nights that we both intended to go to and she said that she is busy working up for the con and would like to start the commissions after the con. I agreed to this. I asked how she would like to handle the payment and she said that she wished it upfront. Living with her at the time I was okay with this so I sent her the $60 total for the two commissions on Paypal.

About a month after the con I was no longer talking with these two people for reasons. And about a month after that I asked Crys for an update on the commission as I'd never seen her working on it myself but I didn't doubt she was working on it as I'd often seen her drawing. However I found that she had not done anything on it. I believe about a month after that we agreed for it to be one two person commission of me and my now fiance. Soon after that I saw a sketch of it and was happy with the results and gave her the all lights are green on it to just finish it.

Since then I've been waiting for the piece to be produced. Messaging her here and there to try and get an update on the situation. While she is always prompt with her replies she still seems to not be getting anywhere with the piece. She has not insulted me on this situation from what I know but she has finished commissions that I know for a fact she took after mine as recently she finished a commission for a couple who I happen to be friends with that I know didn't get together until after my commission. As well as working on a set of dolls that she owns. As well as going to both meetings for her local doll group and local furr meets. She has had easy access to the internet and no computer problems. The only issue I've known off happened in the last few days where she injured her drawing hand. However it been over half a year easy now for the piece in general and no progress past a sketch.

Short conversations about the piece.

I received a message from Crys the Hybrid saying she had the flat colors down.

Your post is a little rambly and difficult for me to understand, so let me just check I understand your situation

- The commission was started in April 2010
- In May you asked for it to be switched to something else because the original pic was for two people you are no longer friends with
- Shortly after you got a sketch which was approved, and now she's just been taking too long

Now I feel that the wait you've had thus far is unreasonable, especially if other pieces taken later are being finished before yours. Exceptions to this would be if yours is incredibly complicated, or you have requested changes, but your post does not suggest this is the case.

It is good that she is keeping in contact with you at least. With a lot of bewares the artists tend to ignore their clients so this is a positive sign. Now on the other side though, you bring up that she has been working on dolls for herself, and going to local meets. That imo is a little unfair. If a person owes work they are still allowed to have a life.

Since her hand has been injured recently, and you only just became aware that progress has been made, she obviously must have been working on this albeit slowly.
It takes time for artwork to go from the sketch to the ink phase and if flats are done then presumably all that is left for her to do is the shading, which will not be complete until her hand is better, I assume. You have been more than patient but since your piece is almost finished I'm just wondering why post this now? Is it solely because she is slow, or some other reason?

I agree with this sentiment. It seems to be a warning of a person with sloppy business practices, not a scammer or a thief. I had similar issue with an artist and I posted here just to let people know of my experience in case someone down the line went "huh, I'm waiting a long time for this, I wonder if I'm ever going to get my art or if I'm an isolated case."

Crys the Hybrid
Also sorry about the rambling part of my posts. I've always gotten that from people for different reasons. But you did get the main points of the post though so at least I was able to convey that.

Yeah she has replied to my messages easily so she didn't ignore me. Which I wanted to make sure all the info was given that way no one can say I'm unfair in my handling of this situation.

I don't mind her having a life but I wanted to make sure its known she is doing those things to prove that she is not busy in such a way that would make it so she can't do the commission. And when at the fur meets she goes to she is doing sketch commissions and even did one such commission sitting right beside me.

She can have a life all she wants and I encourage it. Just when you take money from people to do commissions its like a job and you can't just slack off at your job because you feel like hanging with people. You must make time for both.

Her injured is only recent in the last two days. Leaving plenty of time to have done it before the injury. I'm fine with her letting the injury heal and it should be noted in how the situation unfolds. Some more work has been done on it yes. From my understanding its been nothing but a sketch until a short time before this injury.

The reason the post was made though is because she is slow. And not just slow a year slow for this. Like you said a wait for thing is not something that can just slide. Its a Artist Beware post for that reason. Beware that she has done this and will possibly or most likely do it again.

Crys the Hybrid
This is something that people need to watch out for.

And to clarify she doesn't send me messages. I have to message her to get a reply.

Re: Crys the Hybrid
Understood! I was not questioning the validity of the post, just wanting to ensure I hadn't missed something :)

The wait is indeed unacceptable as your piece kept getting pushed back and I know how frustrating that is.
While not a scammer or thief, this artist really needs to review her business practices because when receiving money in exchange for a service a certain amount of professionalism is required. Not just with doing things in order, but updating clients periodically. A customer shouldn't have to chase someone to receive updates on their piece. It was her job to keep you informed with how things are going. The beware is appreciated, and perhaps you should direct the artist to this post as it may give her some food for thought.

I commissioned Taillone about a month ago for a sketch commission and she was prompt about it and had no problems with her.

Before that, she promised free icon requests for people who promoted her journal about it and I have yet to receive my free icon from her (though, as I didn't give her money, I doubt I will get it so it's no big deal, I would have liked to have gotten it though. :c )

I haven't had any bad experience with Taillone and she was quick about my commission. I hope you get what you paid for and I hope everything works out nicely for you! :)

From my information this isn't the first time this has happened. I've been told that she took 3 years to make a badge for a friend of mine.

That's horrible. :c

I think she was prompt with mine because mine was just a stream sketch, not anything too complicated or elaborate.

I wish that she would have made my free icon though, she made several icons for like the first few people who posted in her journal yet she still hasn't made mine even though the journal was made on January 20th, and she told me she was working on it (I doubt I will get it though. As I said, it's not a big deal as it was a request, not paid art). Still would have been nice to get it, you know?

Anyway that's beside the point, I think it's horrible to keep you waiting and yet she keeps opening for stream commissions and other types of commissions.

Have you tried asking her for a refund?

I don't really wish for a refund I really just want my piece. But It is not worth such a long wait for a piece unless its like the piece of pieces.

Yeah, this is like what's happening with my piece by Crys, except mine's taken longer.

I commissioned mine back in Oct. 2009, and still haven't seen even a sketch of either part to the commission.
