So, months back I made a post about Chapperice on FA/DA who I commissioned for an icon back in August. I had contacted her repeatedly on FA, on AIM, etc, without a response. I guess her friend or something let her know she saw the post about her on here and then she finally responded. At that point I was just frustrated at lack of communication. Here's that post:

So, anyway, it's been... 7 or 8 months? Either way, I'm really frustrated. If you look at the last post she offered all of these extra commissions to make up for the communication problem, which was nice of her and everything, but I probably would've cared one way or the other about them as long as I just got the icon I paid for. She's posted on FA recently, but hasn't messaged me at all, blah blah blah.

I'd be really happy with just a refund at this point, even though still getting my icon would be really great, because from the sketch she showed me it looked really cute. I'm really sad about it.

So. Yeah. I don't know what to do about it - I guess there isn't much I can do. As much as I hate to say it about anyone, I'd probably advise not commissioning her if she ever offers commissions again. It's not JUST the waiting thing, even though I do think it's been a little bit long for a icon, it's just really sort of frustrating to be promised things and then not even contacted with updates or anything like that. It especially stinks because she seemed really nice every time she DID actually contact me, and I don't want to say unkind things about anyone, but it's sort of unfair.

Yeah it's been 5 months since she said "sorry" so you're definitely more than up for a full refund.

Do you have an email for her?

Man, I honestly hate it when an artist promises to do extras. It just means that now my project is twice as much work and stress, and so they're going to be that much less motivated to do it!

You might actually have some luck contacting her, saying you really don't want any of the extra stuff, just what you paid for in the first place, and can she please just finish that and you'll be totally happy. Possibly not, but if the extras are making her more stressed over how much work she has to do for you, that might help.

I can understand them wanting to do damage control and placate an unhappy customer, but given that the situation usually stems from them not coming through in the first place, it just seems like more empty promises, and as you say, stress. I think most people would rather just have the commission completed as per the original agreement, and THEN once that's been taken care of the artist can try to redeem themselves through something extra.

I agree. It's one thing to offer free art if it's stuff you already have made as a little perk or apology but customized new art on top of late art is a bad idea.

Agreed. Adding more work on top of an already behind list doesn't help an artist. It's better to get the work done then give a gift later on once they've got themselves sorted out.

Luckily when I finally buckled down and did this I did manage to throw in something extra, and since wombats are actually really fun to draw (like little mini bears!) I don't mind drawing more to make up for it C:

Yes, this. It's really nice to get little surprises in your inbox. I think the surprise is just as good as the extra that's included in the note/email/whatever

I'm sorry this is happening to you. I really do hope you'll get some kind of resolution soon.

You may have noticed my comment to your previous entry. Sadly, I've heard absolutely nothing in regards to what I wrote about (which she incidentally replied to), so her name remains on my community's black list. I made the comment as a show of character for her. I don't think it makes much difference that the agreement there was little more than an icon itself (a 2.5x3.5 to 4x6 inch artcard). It's the fact she skipped out on an agreement and admits to it that bothers me so much.

I'm unfortunately terrible with commitments, and recent events in my life have shown me that art is not really my calling, which is partially why I'm so terrible at meeting deadlines with art.

I vaguely remember what you refer to, I think over time I figured it was too late to give in my part so I gave up on it (and i was having a lot of trouble with the drawing I was doing which was frustrating and made me give up on it).

I'm not accepting money for art anymore unless it's a donation of some sort or the person pays me AFTER they get their artwork and only AFTER, and I'm not doing any sort of thing that's a trade unless I am absolutely sure I can do my part and sit down and start it right then and there.

It would have been appreciated if you'd have communicated something with me. All I knew was that I had a disappointed person who didn't receive a card and someone who hadn't completed their end of the agreement. I took care of matters myself, as I do when these things happen, even though my own schedule is a little cramped sometimes. That's beside the point, though. I did try to contact you. You just never told me what was going on, and that's really why I'm disappointed with you. While you would have ended up on the black list anyway, I'd have been a lot less frustrated with you if only you had talked to me about it.

I had told you, though. I distinctly remember telling you that I would probably be late and was having trouble finishing it. When i got blacklisted, I gave up.

I also never received a card myself, so I hope I'm not the only person on that blacklist C:

Sadly, there are several names on there.

I've unfortunately had a bit of an art breakdown in recent months. I did tell you before that contacting me on DA would be a better place because I do not check my FA often (this is the first time in awhile, and only to make a post about my birthday, but luckily it is motivating me to draw).

I'm an absolutely terrible person to commission and i know it. I have terrible motivation but it's getting better now that I've put art on "Hobby" instead of "Career." my hand to god, I am running to get my tablet the minute I finish this, grabbing your refs, and drawing the icon once and for all. I will still do free art for you on top of it but possibly not right away i'm not sure. Maybe some cute doodles of your character like I recently did mine for warmups.

I'm terribly sorry it's taking me so long, and there's no excuse for my poor communication.

Hi, thanks for replying.

Honestly, once again. It's not the time thing because I'm pretty patient, it's the fact that I feel like you outright ignored me every time I tried to contact you. :/ I emailed you because I do not have a Deviant Art account and didn't really want one -- and anyway I shouldn't have to search around for you to find out what happened to a commission I bought over half a year ago. It just makes it so I can't shake the feeling that you would have just blown the commission off if I wouldn't have made multiple posts on here, lol. :/

Nonetheless, I'm still really excited about the icon. The extra art, like I said, is really unnecessary. It would be nice, but I won't hold a grudge against you for *that* if you are too busy to do it or something like that. Just want what I paid for. :]

And once I get it it's really all water under the bridge to be honest. I can appreciate the predicament you got yourself into and I realize it must have been frustrating, so I'm really not all that angry or anything. Thanks for being honest with me.

Check your FA C: I've made a icon and a couple of doodles (one that I turned into the icon). I will still do the carrot icon if you want that one too C:

ChapperIce here. Since this is old and was resolved, can it be marked as such so I can clear my reputation a little bit? i've been trying to start fresh since this was cleared up and have not taken on commissions since this since I was too irresponsible. I'm trying to get to a point where I feel I can be trusted with doing work for other people again and I've learned from this experience.

As such, i would like it if this could be marked as resolved for anyone who goes through archives or searches up my old name in the future.

I tagged it as resolved and removed the beware tag. Good luck and I hope things go better for you this time!

thank you very much C: I've learned my lesson thanks to this community. I hope other artists who end up on here learn from it too and change for the better.

You're welcome! And that would be nice if everyone handled it as maturely as you.. but usually, they go more along the lines of 'ZOMG, THEY'RE ALL TROLLS, I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO KEEP PEOPLE'S MONEY AND GIVE THEM NO PRODUCT!!'
