Beware of Centurymon

A lot of people know of Centurymon, whose DeviantArt gallery is available here: http://centurymon.deviantart.com/

I believe she also has a Fur Afinity account, and was also an active member of Subeta, which is where this complaint originated.

I was looking at some recent commissions Cenutrymon was posting on Subeta (for those of you that are members, you can see her forum post here) when I first noticed that many of her commissions had the same pose as offical Subeta art, just flipped. You can see pretty much all the official Subeta pet art here as well. When I brought up to some friends that she had clearly been copying poses and charging real money for them, we dug a little deeper and discovered she has been actually tracing the images, not just using similar poses. She was even flipping several images and tracing lines from -many- different poses, but the point is, all the lines were traced and none of it was her original art.

I actually set up a Photobucket here with a ton of the pictures we found proof of, so feel free to browse.

EDIT, because it's been asked I post more of the Subeta examples instead. Will have that up in two seconds.
SEVERAL MORE can be posted if people want to see.

Er,

I /might/ see a few traced bits on some of the photobucket stuff (but it's a little hard to tell what's the original and what's the commission)
but this example you posted doesn't look like a trace to me.
Trace = lines line up. I see no lines lining up.

I'll gladly post what IS the original versus the commission, but it lines up 100%. Also, to be specific on the examples above, the body matches up in three points, the chest/stomach, the curve of the back, and the lower line of the leg.

In the very first example in the photobucket, where there's five images all similar, her commission art is the one that never changes. The pictures changing in the back is the official Subeta art she copied off of.

uh
Is it just me or does nothing match up in that last example? there are waaaay too many differences for that to be a trace S:| It doesn't even look eyeballed.

Looking through the photobucket account...a lot of this seems like reaching. I'm pretty sure many of those Subeta commissions are supposed to be used as overlays, so of course they're going to look similar to the original art, that's kind of the point, right?

Subeta commissions can be used as overlays, sure - if you DRAW them yourself. She was charging real money to trace Subeta art, which is, well, against Subeta's TOS. She was also telling her commissioners that it was 100% original art.

*Shrugs* If anyone here wants to commission her, be my guest. But you'll be getting what you paid for - a lot of frankenstined, traced artwork.

Wow, that is definitely reaching, in my opinion. It took me forever just to figure out where things supposedly overlapped. Some of the photobucket examples are a little more obvious, but eh...

I can't say I really think any of his is very legit. To be honest, most of them are really reaching. And the big one you posted? Is so far off, that I can't quite see it as a trace. It's like you're trying too hard just to find any similarities. Generic animal poses cannot be trademarked, or copyrighted, or what have you.

Yes there are small bits and pieces that seem to be kind of used, but nothing in its entirety. You seem to be going way out of your way to try and mar this persons reputation. And I don't think the images are so close, that it can be tracing or copying. Not if she changed things up enough to make it her own. Charging for it makes it kind of a grey area, but I think these are vastly different images.

I get the feeling this is a grudge post. But feel free to bring more solid proof?

Also forgot to mention, I did a trade with her recently, and was incredibly happy with her end of the trade. It was prompt, and looked quite unique! But it wasn't animal related.

Yeah, I think you should put the Subeta pics up. Her frankensteining is a lot more apparent in those.

I mean, really...

That overlay just doesn't do it for me... you're having to move the image around on the picture even to try and match it up. Style is completely different. Character is completely different. I don't think you can copyright the pose of a quad animal with two of it's legs up. o_o JUST SAYIN'. Some poses ARE going to be similar to others just by chance.

I can see how some of the stuff in photobucket may be a little fishy, but I guess I thought some Neopet stuff was supposed to follow a sort of specific 'look'.
I did a trade with Centch and the resulting image looked very unique to me. (also it wasn't Neopet related. >_> ) So, yeah...

Ok so some of them seem a bit reaching, but I'm surprised everyone is saying they're all reaching. The bowing puppy one, the lines are in the exact same place! There's no deviation between the two o_o Am I missing something or how is this not tracing? It's almost like she used the exact same lineart.

A lot of these "reaching" replies happened before a lot of these examples were posted up properly. We didn't have as much to go on *lol*.

in the end, perhaps it amounts to how much "tracing" is too much. Perhaps a little bit was traced, but most was either eyeballed or done on her own. Who knows?

When i first read this post, i had to really stare hard, and honestly I couldn't tell what was going on. i felt it was reaching. [glad to see i'm not the only one.]

There are a few there that looks to be spot on traced, in part. like the feet, and what not.

the rest? I dunno. I'm in no position to say.

In the end, I think it's really all about how much tracing is too much...which true No tracing should be done [when charging, and claiming to be 100 percent original]
I dunno. Guess I have nothing else to add.

Good luck sorting this out.

The fennec-looking thing, the puppy, and the last creature are the ones that really stood out to me. Honestly, even exact tufts of fur have clearly been traced on the aforementioned images.

I couldn't find her commissions page (or any sort of proof that she admits to doing this), though I did find that her Subeta account is frozen.

Mar. 7th, 2010 04:04 am (UTC)
Her Subeta account was frozen for art stealing, clearly!

I'm waiting for permission from a forum I'm on to post a thread that would be members-only - her best friend Nestly (user Nestly on DA as well, they're constantly talking about it) admitting how 'ashamed' Centch is, but that she's not ashamed enough to apologize to anyone (she did arrange refunds for people who had YET to receive their art but not for people who had already received it.)

She did have her commission DevArt FULL of these, but took them all down after she was called out on it:

Picture of gallery before

Gallery now.

I'm a bit saddened to see this, since I'm a fan of her non-Subeta work & have spoken to her a few times on a very friendly basis (and happen to be a waiting client on FurAffinity). I'm not egging anything on, but since there were demands for "proof" I figured I'd share.

God, I hate Subeta staff. Bunch of jerks shut down my business 'cause they said I was doing 'recreations'. >_> 8:32 AM Mar 5th via web

I really hope this is resolved or better yet (in my case), is merely only happening on Subeta and/or won't happen again now that she's more or less banned from there. I've never questioned her art otherwise, so I was rather shocked to see this post! :C

Yeah, that was before she found out we had pictures showing she had actually -traced- the art. She was telling people she just used similar poses, until we started to line things up =/

I don't know, personally I could never get art from her again, or see her art in the same light again, especially knowing she screwed so many people over - she finished at least 10 of these commissions charging between $10-13 each for them.
