Beware - Rika/Rika-Wulf

Edit: Resolved, I've received the art and Rika included another sketch of the scene.

Edit: One of Rika's watchers called me a bitch and a greedy cunt on FA because I didn't inquire about Rika's well-being/personal life when I asked for updates on the status of my commission, so I've decided to throw in the towel in regards to the commission.

I made the mistake of replying to people who made comments about 'impatient jerks' harrassing her for commissions and I guess people didn't appreciate hearing my side of the story

I'll put my PMs in Bold and Riks's in italics

I had initially commissioned her on the end of June 2008 via the Furaffinity PM system, but FA went down within days of sending the PM, so it continued via the FA forums PM system after I located her on the forums

July 14th 2008

Just before Furaffinity went down I sent you a note in regards to a Storm Hawks commission, I was just wondering if you got it? Thanks

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I'll need the description again. X3 If you don't mind. And was it for inked or colored work?

17th July 2008:

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I had to bring two little snakes to their new home and other RL issues getting in the way.

Well, I prefer sketches to inked work if thats at all possible, I like the rawness of sketches. I really like the sketch version of your "Year of the Rat" piece

The characters in question are Repton and Starling, my favourite (tho rare and non-canon) in Storm Hawks.

The details are that they are on a large bed, and it is their first time together, which they both have been wildly anticipating as they are both in lust with each other.
The position they're in is that position where the guy is kneeling and the woman is straddling his waist facing him. I don't want to see penetration (as I feel you don't need to see it for a picture to be erotic)
I have included a link to my photobucket album with references for both characters. I'd like him to be as close to how he looks in the show as possible (because he's gorgeous the way he is) but it doesn't matter if she's more realistic looking.
The bed doesn't have to be very detailed, it just has to give the impression that they're on a bed (with rumpled sheets of course). I'd like him to be kissing her neck
The only other requisite is that they're both enjoying themselves

Thank you for considering this commission

20th July 2008:

Do you accept PayPal?

21st July 2008:

Yep (email not shown here)

How much would the Storm Hawks commission be?

24th July 2008:

Hello, I was wondering if you got the description for the Storm Hawks commission? I seem to be having a bit of trouble with the PM system

How much would I be looking at for an adult commission?

July 25th 2008:

(I've been having a problem with it too. I replied, but guess you never got it.) ^^;;

For a sktech...

It'd be $25 because it's 2 characters and has a bit of background.

and I believe I gave you my paypal, just add %2 to the total to cover paypal fees.

and do you want it mailed to you?
$3 US
$6 international

Sorry for the wait and technical problems,

July 26th 2008:

Hi, i have just sent payment for the commission

Yes, I'd like it mailed to me, but I was also wondering is it possible to have a digital copy as well?
Would it be possible for me to put it up on my furaffinity page saying it was a commission by you with a link to your gallery?

Oh, and I've got a little more information that I forgot to include, in the fanfic I'm writing Repton has scars on his
upper back from a time where he got whipped for failing a mission.
Oh, and I like the idea of him kissing her neck.

So, you'd like a 300 dpi scan of it? (if you don't know, it's a high quality printable scan) Yes I can do that. As long as you don't distribute it.

Yes you can put it up on fa with credits to me.

and be a bit more descriptive on the scars; Placement and shape, how many and such.=3

I'm going to warn you now, I'm moving on monday and I have a bit of preperation and stuff, as well as some other commissions I'm working on, so please be patient with me. <3

Thank you

July 27th 2008:

He's got five raised scars on his upper back which are usually covered by the short leather waistcoat he wears. They are
faint yet still visible, they were caused when one of his boss's torturers used a lash on him. They are diagonal and reach
from almost one side of his back to the other. I'm not the greatest at descriptions i hope this is enough

And yes, I'd like a 300 dpi scan of it, please

And I hear you about moving, I'm going to university in Wales in September and I live in Ireland... and I'm hoping to bring 15 snakes and two geckos with me

I didn't hear anything back from her until I sent this PM on August 2nd 2008

Hi, did you get the message I sent to you about Repton's scars? I'm still having trouble with the PM system

It was over a week until she got back to me:

11th August 2008

Hi, just updating you, I should be getting started on your commission either today or tomorrow. From there I can give you a reasonable finishing time. Yay! =3

12th August 2008

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing it

16th August 2008

Bah, sorry I got behind. Your commission should be finished sometime tuesday. Keep an eye out for it. Bah...I forgot, did you want it colored?

17th August 2008

It was just a sketch, thanks

Alrighty. I'll have it for you tuesday. Did you want it shipped?

18th August 2008

I accidentally put the reply into the quote section. I've been accidentally doing a lot of things recently, I accidentally booked myself into the wrong hostel in Vancouver last week.

I'd like to have it shipped, but I was wondering if you could wait a while before shipping it? I'm out of Ireland at the moment and if it arrived whilst I'm away I don't want to risk my parents opening it.

19th August 2008

Completely understandable. =3 no problem

At this point the commission process moved onto the Furaffinity PM system

27th August 2008:

Sorry the sketch is taking so long. I've drawn it 3 times and I haven't liked any of them. I haven't forgotten about you, just letting you know. =3

That's OK, I haven't been around much in FA recently anyway, I attended a con in Vancouver and the hotel was charging $11 per day for wired access in the room which I didn't bother to avail of and the con was taking up my time anyway. What little access I did get in the business centre was devoted to clearing my inbox of spam.

Take your time, I'm happy to wait

I regret telling her to take her time, it was not a smart move on my part. More than a month later I decided to send inquire about the status of the commission

11th November 2008

How is the Storm Hawks commission coming along?

10th December 2008

I was just wondering what is the status of the Storm Hawks commission?

On December 12th I'd had enough and posted the following in the Furaffinity forums titled "Artists ignoring PMs" http://forums.furaffinity.net/showthread.php?t=32663

I commissioned a picture from an artist over four months ago.

The last correspondence I had from the artist was over three months ago.

Since then I have had no response to my PMs or my messages on the artists journal.

I paid for the commission upfront.

I just want to know the status of my commission.

The artist is still active on FA as they have time to update their journal and upload pictures.

It is my opinion that if they have time to engage in these activities they have time to reply to my PMs.

If the artist in question reads this post, it is at all possible to read your bloody PMs once in a while?

Note: I will not hesitate to reveal your identity on the forums and mention you on
http://community.livejournal.com/artists_beware/ if this issue continues

In less than two hours I had a PM on the forums from her including a link to the commission:

I'm so osrry this took so long. Completely my fault. I've been real picky with it and finally got something I like. If there are any changes needed don't hesitate to tell me. I'll give you the 300dpi scan when you approve the pic.

I was furious when I saw the pic, it looks like it was probably sketched inbetween me posting in the forum and her sending me the PM, it looks sub-par compared to other sketches she's done and the anatomy was atrocious. Starling's rear and thighs were enormous and there was no line on Repton's legs to indicate where the back of his legs were
I don't have the initial pic anymore, I had it saved onto my computer, but I recently lost all the data on my computer and it will cost hundreds of euros to retrieve said data.

Anyway, there's evidence of the initial pic on the completed pic, there's a link to the completed pic below and you can actually see the sketch lines of how Starling's rear and thighs originally looked behind her revised rear and thighs

Warning NSFW http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x260/GrainneG/Private/pkbitchgirl011.jpg

I got back to her, but, stupidly, I didn't want to make a fuss and didn't voice all my complaints about the image

14th December 2008

Thanks for getting back to me, but the photo isn't showing up on photobucket anymore, it says it violated their terms of service.

I had a quick look at it before I went to bed, it looks quite good, but her thighs seem to be a bit too large, her bottom half is out of proportion with her top half.

On January 10th 2009 I received the completed sketch, I still wasn't happy with it, but decided to leave it at that. University and exam stress got in the way of me replying to her for a few weeks

31st January 2009

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, my time's been taken up with exams and revising for said exams.

The commission is looking good, do you want my shipping info now?

6th February 2009

Yeah, I'll go ahead and get that now. I'll have it mailed off this weekend. =3

I read that PM after returning from a SciFi convention and I caught con-crud so I didn't have the energy or motivation to reply to her PM with my shipping details.

I had personal problems around this time, including dropping out of university due to health problems, so the commission fell to the back of my mind when I fell into depression about failing at university and truth be told all the hassle with this commission made me not care about it anymore.

It wasn't until October 2009 that the commission came into my mind again so I PMed her on the FA forum

29th October 2009

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I've been ill and suffering from personal problems.

My mailing address is

I didn't receive a reply so two weeks later on November 12th 2009 I resent the message

I sent the message again on December 12th 2009, according to her FA forum stats she was logging in to the forums

On January 3rd 2010 I PMed her on FA's own site PM system (and received a reply)

I was wondering if you got my PMs in the forum

No i didn't. I don't usually go into the forums anymore.

Gimme a sec and I'll check it :3

Her forum stats said she'd logged into after she sent me the PM yet she didn't reply to my forum PM stating when she'd have the commission mailed

At the beginning of February she posted a journal (now deleted, I capped it but it was saved to my deceased laptop) that made me see red. She posted that she and her BF only had $400 left and they risked losing their computer and instead of cancelling the upcoming convention she was attending she actually asked for donations from her watchers! This is completely tacky IMO especially when you owe several people commissions (I know of at least three other people who she owes commissions) and when I mentioned it on the DeviantArt forums most artist thought it was tacking and unprofessional

A day or two later she posted that they'd received enough to keep their computer (she had said that the computer would cost them $200), I decided to send her a note on FA's system about the commission and her lack of response to my forum PM

6th February 2010

According to your stats in the forums you logged in that day, but I didn't hear anything back from you about the commission.

What is the status of the commission?

I'll be mailing you the pic soon. As of right now, i don't have the money to be mailing anyting that can't fit in an envalope. (I usually mail my art in bubble mailers or mailers with cardboard to protect the piece. Just give me a few days so we can pay our electricity and internet bill.

This annoyed me, as I felt she could have used to some of the money she'd received in donations to mail the item. Anyway, a few days turned into several weeks and in the meantime she attended a convention (Furry Fiesta) which would hardly be cheap (I know I attend several cons every year) so if she can afford that how come she can't afford to mail art?

On Ustream I spoke to a professional artist who's quite well known on Deviant Art and he said the paying for internet excuse was weak, I'd already paid for the art to be mailed when I paid for the commission and it was unprofessional to be taking money for art that you didn't deliver. I decided to send another PM to her

1st March 2010

I'm just wondering what the status of the commission is, thanks

I have yet to receive a reply, according to FA she hasn't read the PM yet, but she's on FA since I sent the PM as she's uploaded art.

Speaking to the other artist on Ustream has made me come to the realisation that it's time to throw the towel in in regards to this commission.

I've just checked FA again and she still hasn't read the PM.

TR;DL - Rika/Rika-wulf charges upfront for commissions, doesn't deliver and ignores PMs unless you threaten her with this comm

I've said this before and I'll say this again. Nothing is more aggravating than a commissioner that doesn't reply. It's really not that hard, specially if you're a person of few words.
Mar. 3rd, 2010 04:17 am (UTC)
You would be right, artists should NEVER put off shipping due to do not having the money if you PAID for it. That's not food money, that's not internet money, that part of payment is only for shipping, end of story.

My husband paid for a 5-character piece from her back in September 2009 or so. He still hasn't seen ANYTHING, so progress, nothing.

I spoke to Rika in person a Furry Fiesta, where she was working an artist' alley table, and she claimed she's had some difficult real-life issues going on. I was unaware that others are having issues getting their work from her, so I'll let him know. Thank you for the heads-up.

That sketch is... really crappy :/ I wouldn't even want the hardcopy, and it does seem to be far below quality compared to the other stuff in her gallery.

Unfortunately you've told her you were okay with it. I understand why, but ehh... anyway, definitely seems like someone to avoid.
Mar. 3rd, 2010 04:35 am (UTC)
Like others, I'm baffled at the low quality of her sketch for you, compared to the rest of her gallery. I saw the sketch, before I saw her gallery, and thought "Oh, a beginning artist". Then I looked at her gallery, and I recognized many of the pictures in her gallery from other people's faves on FA...her gallery is very polished, and it appears she's a seasoned artist. I know everyone has 'off' days, but yikes, I've never seen such a difference in skill between an artist's sketch and the rest of their gallery (except in theft cases, which this isn't).
Mar. 3rd, 2010 05:13 am (UTC)
It was a sketch I did a while back. My abilities as an artist have gotten better since then. So I honestly don't think quality should be brought up. I'm not happy with a lot of things I did around that time.

She just posted a journal once again claiming money issues.

I also had money issues, but rather than going to a con, I elected to skip out on Furry Fiesta and make sure to mail out the things I owe. Mailing something priority would be about 4 dollars. This is not a lot of money. I think this person needs to learn some better money management and then learning to organize their priorities before going to more cons and taking more commissions.
Mar. 3rd, 2010 05:46 am (UTC)
Going to the con kept me from getting evicted... I wasn't putzing around there I was trying to make money.

I think one of the biggest problems was in that she was uncommunicative with the commissioner. She may not be a bad person, sure, but that is a very valid problem and something that she needs to work on. It may be embarrassing to say 'I haven't gotten to it yet', but trust me, it's better than ignoring them and hoping they go away, because they aren't going to forget it.

Jeeze I'm not liking this because artists I love are noticing me for my mess up... not for talent... I've explined myself, admitted I messed up, and am trying to work something out to get this out to her as soon as I can... But it's that whole first impression thing, still...

And in my defense on the art, I did it months and months ago. My art from that time looks like crap. :\

so, wait, did you pay the money to have it shipped already? If so, then she has no excuse about not having the money to send it. Yes, it's a ball-ache having to spend a few dollars of your own money to ship a commission, but if you actually already took money FOR the shipping, even if you did spend it on something else, that's your own fault as the artist, and you have to send it regardless as it's already been paid for, that shipping money was for shipping, not for anything else (and, sorry, even the most poor of internet artists can find a couple of dollars in the couch cushions, it's hardly as if you're sending a huge, heavy item)

I dunno, if I donated money to someone to help them pay for X, I'd be pretty ticked if they spent it on other stuff. Though she should have saved the money you gave her for shipping, you also told her she could take her time and asked her to wait with shipping. So while she should definitely be responding to messages, she might have produced and sent the work sooner had you not given her the okay to take her time.

Also, Ustream-artist isn't fully aware of Rika's situation and therefore can't judge it. She may have paid the majority of convention expenses long before she got into financial trouble.

I hope you get your art in the mail soon so you can get out of each other's hair.
Mar. 3rd, 2010 02:24 pm (UTC)
I told her to take her time in completing the commission, but I never said she should take her time in mailing it.

It was the lack of communication whilst I was waiting for the commission to be completed which I took issue to (I didn't mind waiting, I did mind not knowing anything about the status of the commission), and then the failure to mail it out and lack of explanation as to why it wasn't mailed out.

This has already been resolved between me and her. I'm sending it before friday.

I'm tired of hearing about how I screwed up. Yes I know I did. I messed up, it happens, I'm trying my damndest to not let it happen again, I'v apologised for not responding, I read notes and forget to reply for whatever reason. I aplogised and fixed everything.

It's fixed

I admitted I fu*ked up...

Leave it. And stop telling me how dumb I am...

The OP will be the one to announce its resolved, which will most likely be when they have the final product in hand.

I know you are frustrated, and I've yet to see anyone refer to you as 'dumb' in this post (they'd be told not to by myself or one of the other Mods if they were)... BUT you're going to have to chalk up this post and all of its commentary (good and bad) as a learning experience to take with you into the future.

Ouch, that sketch is just dire, even if it's old? It's not the anatomy that bugs me so much as it is the fact that it doesn't look remotely like the characters in question. I mean what the hell happened to Repton's face?

As for the artist's whole "everythings going wrong, it's not my fault", I think she needs to learn that while someone can say "hey guy's I'm having a bit of trouble right now" nobody has to accept the excuse (especially if they don't even communicate) if the commissioner is understanding and is willing to wait? It's a favour to an artist, it's not something we should expect and it is something we should be grateful for (I know I am when something goes wrong and the commissioner is understanding) artists should not take the understanding of clients for granted.

Not to mention, we all go through tough times, many of us struggle with major life issues. It seems to me that half the fandom's artists seem to regard even the most minor issue as reason to put off doing paid for work and to wail about how hard they have it. Which of course makes it harder for those of us who do suffer serious issues since the more people who are burnt by bad artists, the less likely they are to be understanding when a genuine issue happened to an otherwise reliable artist.

And of course her whole "it's resolved, I promise to send it out" replies to this post? She needs to learn that it is resolved when it actually resolved and not before them. This community has seen many flaky artists promise to fix a problem then drag it on for however more years, hell some of the artists posted about here haven't delivered eight year old commissions despite numerous promises to sort themselves out. A promise means nothing unless it's kept and seen to be kept.
