smoking furs

I feel this is an appropriate place to post this, but if for any reason this is offtopic at all I apologize. The creator of This Webpage has illegally reposted and altered dozens of images from artists who never gave him permission (including myself). I can list Katarina, Huskie, Megan Giles, Synnabar, Ashryn, Arphalia, Michelle Light and many others whose art has been yoinked and reposted here for this guy's own pleasure. Granted, not all of the images are altered, but most if not all are reposted without permission and without credit.

Normally I don't have a problem with people posting my art on their site, it's free publicity if they credit me. I didn't have a problem with this very situation until I exchanged a series of emails with him recently.

It begins with me sending a note of concern. If he wants to repost images he ought to have the artist's permission.

I caught wind of your smoking furs page on yahoo and noticed my work on
there: http://aelfhame.net/~smokingfurry/Jody.jpg Unlike other artists that
have probably contacted you, I don't mind if it's there. However, for
future reference you should talk to the original artists before putting up
their work. If you can't get a hold of them, don't post it. A lot of
artists are picky about that, I consider it good publicity though (so long
as things aren't altered). One thing you should do is post credit for each
artist. I noticed you have an "added" date, you could just post the
artist's name and gallery link there for reference. This will quell worries
other artists have about you posting their work. I know I want my name by
my work wherever it is. If for some reason you can't or won't put up
credit, please take my piece down. It does me no good to have an anonymous
image up. Thanks for listening, hope you haven't gotten to much trouble
from other artists.

~Shadow Wolf

Most of the art I have here I've had for years making it impossible to
identify the original artists and get permission from them. In fact I'm
willing to bet most of the artists whose works are shown here would not be
happy about it because smoking is rather taboo subject. Purging all the
artwork which I don't have permission for would shrink the size of my
gallery to a handful of images that most visitors have probably already
seen before. I figure my gallery is not any worse than the millions of
other websites that use images they did not have permission for (both
pornographic and non).

I can add your work to the fan submitted/created page, just tell me what
information you want below it (name, email, homepage, etc...)

I can certainly understand that you may have had these images for a long
time and don't want to go through the trouble to find the original artists.
I don't think the artists would feel bad about you reposting their art
because smoking is a "taboo" subject. In fact I believe that if they are
willing to create a character who is smoking and post it publicly they have
absolutely no problem with it. They have more of a reason to be upset
because you reposted without ever consulting them.

I think it's disrespectful of you to leave them up without permission just
because you don't want to go through that trouble. Sure you'd loose some
images because you couldn't find the original artists, but there is plenty
of smoking furry art on the net, you can find it from it's original source
and ask for repost permission. Since you feel it's unessicary to attempt to
make your actions right by the artists featured in your gallery, I wish to
have my art removed. Please take it down as soon as possible. For future
submissions, please contact the original artist if you wish to avoid this
kind of thing.

~Shadow Wolf

I'm sorry you feel that way. I can't remove your art from my page, the best I can do is add it to the fan art page, if I remove it for one person I'll have to remove it for everybody and I'm not about to do that.

my final response, awaiting his now
</i>If, by the laws of nature, you were not able to remove my art from your page I would understand. However it seems you are simply unwilling to comply. What you are doing is against the law. If you do not take my art down from your page, I will report you to your webhost and they will shut your site down permanently. Remove my image as soon as you are able to if you do not wish this to happen.

~Shadow Wolf</i>

I am now awaiting action or another reply. Take a look through his gallery even if you've never drawn a smoking fur before. He has altered a few images to make them smoke as well. There's a lot to go through, even the fan pages. I was fortunate to only have one piece reposted without my permission, but others much more ripped from their sites and galleries. With this person's apparent noncompliance to regard the original artists' wishes, I'd be on the look out.
Artist's beware has moved!
Do NOT repost your old bewares. They are being archived.

And his thing about not being able to identify the artists is BS - obviously there are plenty of his visitors who know who the art is by. -_-

Did anyone notice that his "fan" page has art by Kyoht credited to some random person? Maybe someone should email THAT guy. :P

Indeed... any support you can offer (contacing original artists, spread the word) will help. I've already contacted the site host to see what they can do.

One of mine is on there - a very old piece, a feline character of mine, Artie, lying on his tummy and smoking. ~_~ A friend pointed it out yesterday, but I hadn't had a chance to email this asshole yet.

Oh, I LOVE this. He's essentially saying, "Well, if I asked they'd say no, so I'm just not gonna ask". Dickwad. I can't wait until half the artists in the furry fandom come down on him like a ton of bricks. ~_~

the more emails he get's the better! one voice means nothing to these dumbasses, but a flood of angry artists might do something ><;

The smoking gryphon on page 2 is definately not his. I've seen it before, IRL, because my room mate from college drew it. Her lj name is pokkettmowse, and she's the same on DA. My friend Matt has already allerted her of the theft.

My art is up there. My old art...
AND the conbadge my huskiebutt did for me.
Downright sick.

My old pic of Diane Crow is there (second to last page).

Still has my watermark on it. I dunno, I don't feel terribly 'violated' or anything...I can understand getting up in arms if your art was altered though.
Oct. 13th, 2004 11:20 pm (UTC)
Understandable. I didn't mind until I found the altered art and the guy refused to take mine down after I asked him to.

I spotted one of Kacey Maltzman's. I know she doesn't allow the re-posting of her artwork, so I emailed her and let her know about this. =)
Oct. 13th, 2004 11:38 pm (UTC)
oh dear, I missed that one... I'm a fan of Kacey's work, have an original of hers. Thanks ^^

All I ask is that my name appear with the art. And I do wish he had done a better job with the photoshoppery! :D
Oct. 14th, 2004 12:20 am (UTC)
Blah. Let us know how it works out. Thanks to a friend, I have very detailed server info, if you wind up needing it. If it wasn't for a fetish page, I really wouldn't mind him using it >_

i see something of mine up there. >:|

i don't mind if my stuff is reposted (with credit), but for the love of god, i've had a "do not repost WITHOUT PERMISSION" warning up on my vcl account for years. the fact that he's flat-out refusing to consult the original artists is what pisses me off the most. there's just no excuse.

at least he's not claiming all the drawings to be his own creations. THAT would get him lynched. >:|

theres a piccy of likeshine up there, by lagartixa harlequinn, smokin' a hookah... *sigh*
Oct. 14th, 2004 08:55 am (UTC)
So THAT's where that drawing went...
Was this the same person who, years before, requested an image of an animal smoking "as a joke to get a friend to quit"?

As for me - as long as my art is not altered and it has my name on it, I'm okay with re-posts.

Did anybody email Jay Naylor (aka Fisk, the owner of FurryMilitia.net)? 'Cause I just found his "Midnight" and since I didn't see anyone mention it, I'm going to give him a poke to take a look.
Oct. 14th, 2004 09:38 am (UTC)
He's got one of mine up there.

Apparently, this person is a member or visitor to the YERF forums. This version of the image was in the YERF coloring thread where I posted this line art and someone else colored it. He obviously stole it from there, unless the person who colored it posted it somewhere.

Ya know, I really have no problem with people posting my art to their websites as long as they are not making a profit off my art or editing it, neither of which this guy is doing. I STILL wish he'd asked me first, and bothered to find a name for it, and even though he didn't do it to mine It bothers me that he has the audacity to edit OTHER people's artwork. Completely careless and lazy individual. I hope he gets his site taken down because of that.

"I don't have time to hunt down the artists" indeed.... Just go through the YERF or VCL archives, most of that stuff can be found there. It's NOT hard
Oct. 14th, 2004 10:19 am (UTC)
This is sickening. I hope this guy gets his website shut down. The only one with rights to redistribute art is the artist themself.
Oct. 14th, 2004 03:38 pm (UTC)
Freeserver is where his page is on.
You can actually report his webpage to them for stolen photos, which they will remove his page immediately upon verifying the information you give them about his site.
I think the e-mail address is abuse@freeservers.com and put in the subject stolen photos. and put the full address of where the stolen photos are located at and the original photos where the owners state no reposting of any drawings without my written permission.
They will yank his webpage down for it.
Oct. 14th, 2004 03:53 pm (UTC)
Actually, I think you all should report him to . . . .
Freeservers now and let him whine about losing his webspace with them cause he refused to do what several artists have asked him to do right now.
I would not wait for him to respond to the e-mail stating that he will do what you ask as from what he stated, he will not do it at all.
I would have them looking at his site and then deleting it after they realize that he has stolen artwork from other sites who's artists stated please get permission from me before you post the images onto your website.
