Do not work with DredWalker

I was commissioned to do some character work for a person called DredWalker on Deviantart. Everything seemed ok when we both agreed to work on his commission piece. So DredWalker said he would send me the first money order in the mail. Which was fine with me so I waited for the money order because I know it's takes about a week to come in the snail mail. First week nothing ok that's fine I can wait, second week nothing ok myabe the mail is slow, third week I e-mailed him back letting him know that I did not get his first money order and that I wouldn't start his project without him making the first payment.  I was charging him a $100 for one human character and one animal character. Our agreement was half up front and the rest of the money when the commissions was done. I'd post the image in my gallery with a water mark and an extra graphic because I knew water marks could be removed.

So he says ok and that it must have gotten lost in the mail, I say that's fine stop payment on that one and just send me other one when you get the money. After that 3 days later I finally got the first money order and  I started on the sketches them showed it to him he approved, then I moved on to the flat colors and he approved of that. Afterwards I would post each piece step by step in my gallery just in case he wanted changes. By the third stage he asked me to make a few changes which I did and it took me an two days. Working with DredWalker seemed to be going well. Here's the link with DredWalker saying he likes what going on so far and said he sent me an e-mail. In the e-mail he did ask for a few changes which I did.

However there was a problem at the end where I asked him to pay me the remaining $50 because I was finished with his commission.   DredWalker said he'd pay me by the end of the week with a personal check, I had to remind him that I didn't take personal checks again I gave him the reason why. Then I got another e-mail from him saying he wanted to see the final image. I didn't think much of it I sent him the final image with a water mark and extra graphic. As I stated here in my journal which I linked him to in our first e-mails back and forth.http://ebony-chan.deviantart.com/journal/14463671/

Then I got another e-mail from him saying he could barely see the image. So I sent him a larger image but I still kept the graphics on it until I was paid. Which is here  http://ebony-chan.deviantart.com/art/DredWalker-s-Dimiri-Done-70509230 let me know if you have a hard time seeing the image people. Again DredWalker e-mails me saying he couldn't really see that image because of the water mark and extra graphics on it and if I could remove them so he could have a better look. ( Oh like I haven't heard that one before! Ha! ) I told him one and they would stay until I was paid the rest of my money.  DredWalker then goes into this rant saying that he already sent me $50 and that I should trust him with the final image. I again said no the graphics stay until I am paid the rest of my money. He then posts in his journal that I cheated him out of money and that he never really got the project.

It's in the link below which you can flow to other links with talks between me and DredWalker. I also copied and paste his journal to mine and address each thing in it.

Not terribly surprised, after reading over the mess in those journals, it was like a guide to What To Not Say To Customers. I also think it's interesting how the name calling and other nonrelevant remarks have distracted them from realizing they are just playing tug of war now and maybe someone should try to come up with a different solution to the problem, use that handy tool called COMPROMISE!

Ebony isn't a bad person, she's just rather hot-tempered, over-estimates her skills, and tends to hold a grudge like anything.

If she only knuckled down and worked on her art and on how she relates to people then she could be a really good artist and actually have a shot at some of her ambitions like the front cover of heavy metal, but until then she's got no chance.

, over-estimates her skills,

I'm glad you said it. I usually don't like to blurt stuff out like this, but in all honesty? I don't think the final piece is worth $100. It needs to be cleaned up, and have anatomy errors fixed.

I've always said that about Ebony. It's a shame because she has a lot of potential but she seems stuck in a perpetual rut.

I agree, and Im glad that I'm not the only one who thought that 100$ was far too expensive for the quality of work shown here. But I've learned not to get into price arguments and spilling out complaints about the expense of other people's commissions. When I do I usually get the whole "I suppose you know nothing about money/pricing/pay-per-hour in the real world! Because if you did you wouldn't complain" insult thrown at me.

I usually don't say anything for the same reasons, but the anatomy on the hyena is really bothering me.

wow, guys -- forgive me, but i believe the point here was that a commission went sour, not that anybody here thinks the art skill level isn't worth the price. is there any way to take this kind of conversation somewhere else?

I don't think the final piece is worth $100

That's what I was thinking.. Had I done a 2 character piece like that, I would have charged $30-40 or so.

But, hey, if that's the price they agreed on....

Yeah I agree, if someones willing to pay out there there's absolutely no reason NOT to charge that much. Thats why price arguments always turn out for the worst. Art is about what it's worth to someone else just as much as yourself and if someone's willing to pay 100$ then thats what it's worth :].

Bleh my last post makes me grumpy now, I sounded like an ass, but it was 2:30 am and I get picky when Im tired. I could have easily kept my mouth shut.

DredWalker Show the final product I hide nothing from him and even e-mailed it to him first. He wanted all the water marks and graphics removed and I told him no not until I get the final payment.

Yes I understand that part. So you keep the final image and don't give it to him until he does, there was no need to harass him and keep posting about him, calling him names and arguing with him until you both lose the thread of the conversation. I understand you may have been trying to warn people about him but I think you went too far and got too personal and inflammatory about it. You two basically had a miscommunication about the payment process, there was no need to make it a mess like it is now.

A lot of your behavior related to this issue is unprofessional and you need to find a way to remain polite and keep your posts productive, try to work around a problem rather than harping on how you are right and he is wrong. That won't solve anything.

In the future, you might want to look into an Escrow service. You send the finished piece to the service, the buyer sends the final payment to the escrow service, the service sends the piece to the buyer and your payment (minus their cut) to you.

Yeah, I know, this is way late in the game, which is why I'm suggesting for any future situations.
