Advice on waiting for a fursuit

So I was curious on what you all would think. This is my first time buying a fursuit from a maker and it's a lot of money to spend.

Now I commissioned this person for a 3/4 fursuit back in November of 2014. I was able to finish paying it off in January of 2015. When I ordered the suit I was quoted 4-5 months roughly.and they warned me it could take longer due to "custom" parts.

I messaged the maker about 1 once a month to see how it was going. I kept getting oh I'm having issues due to this part. And it was always the same part. Well my quoted date came and I asked how it was going and they said they where officially starting to work on the piece. This is 4-5 months later when they quoted to have it finished and they are only just starting it. That really annoyed me but I was like ok only another couple months then.

So I contact them about once a month again with the same response this one thing was holding them up. In the mean time I've seen them post up other commission pieces(which I just hoped they hadn't been ordered after me) as well as ones that they put up for bid.

Well about 3 months after already missing the original quoted time frame they tell me it should be done by the end of the next month, when I contacted them. Ok.

Well obviously it didn't get done well come September/October I finally ask for pictures (which I had requested at the beginning when I filled out their form)they told me they would have pictures for me and that the one item was still giving them issues

Well November hits I've seen no pictures still and I finally have a mini meltdown with the maker. They promised to get me the pictures but they had to rip everything off because of another item they needed to put on. I agreed and so my only pictures are of a head base.

In the mean time they have taken on newer commissions and completed them. Which really made me upset. But I really liked the maker and I don't want to cause them any trouble because they have never given me any reason to not trust them and all of their review have been awesome. But yea idk what to do. Last I talked to them they where sick and they promised me more pictures which they have still not delivered on. What do you all think I should do. I still want my suit and I still want to like the maker so that I can like the suit but I just don't know what to do to actually know I'm getting my suit and that I'm not being taken advantage of.


UPDATE 2/9
So I have decided to give the maker a final deadline of 3 months. That should be long enough to make my suit. I have also told the maker that if they don't have it made by the end of the 3 months then I want a full refund.

A few of you where wondering about my mini meltdown on the maker. Which wasn't really as bad as you all think it was me trying to calmly and correctly word how I felt to the maker for making me wait. The maker was nice enough and understand in their responce if not a little harsh sounding(but it could have just been their choice of words). The reason I ound reluctant to force a refund is more the fact that I personally don't like conflict. I will sit back and let people take advantage of me fore a while until I REALLY blow up. And I personally don't like myself when I blow up so I avoid it. I also have other experiences in real life that affected me in the past for this. It's strange because I'm the first to rip into someone if they are doing the same thing to a friend lol.

But like I said I have given them a deadline to meet one that is hopefully not to stressful on the maker and was reasonable. If they don't meet that deadline I requested a refund. If they don't refund me I will take them to court. I really don't want it to go that far but if I must I will. But I want to give them the chance first. As I stated I really like the person they are an AMAZING maker they are just not very good at the buisness aspect and all that jazz of this which is sad really.

This sort of thing is frustratingly common when dealing with fursuit makers. PERSONALLY, I would ask for a refund at the 13 month (total) mark.

However, it is up to you and makers definitely have delivered 2+ years later. What I would suggest is to go back to the reviews you read about this maker and look at the dates. Both FursuitReview and FursuitCritique have 2 dates on every review- Date commissioned/bought, and date completed/shipped. Take note of the times between those two dates and see if your commission lies extremely out of the norm for that maker.

Well it's a little past the 13th month mark. And requesting a refund is Tha absolute last thing I want to do.

Hearing that it has taken linger in some cases does help some. I think the thing that stressed me out is that I did look at the order and completion dates on the few reviews that there where and they where all within a few months. It's really only been this past year it seems that they have slipped and started taking much longer than usual.

OP, you're a lot more patient than me... I'd have requested a refund as soon as it went over the 12 month mark.

If I was in this position, I'd send them something like this:
'Hi [maker], it's been [x] months since I last contacted you asking for pictures of my suit, and I still haven't seen any. Can you please send me some new photos of my commission?'

If they don't respond within a reasonable amount of time (I personally wouldn't wait more than 1/2 weeks), I'd personally cancel the commission and request a partial refund for any work not completed + the materials to be shipped to me.

If you're happy with their response, I'd say to write down your concerns and let the artist know what your priority is (e.g. if you don't mind waiting another year as long as you're updated regularly, tell them). If you feel you need to, you can put forward some requests yourself (e.g. 'I want you to update me monthly' or 'I want a solid deadline that I can hold you to'). Most makers would be happy to facilitate reasonable requests like this, and if not, you always have the option to cancel and request a refund. Good luck!

That's something I'll consider and the maker is normally really good at responding in a timely manner I think at most I have waited a week for a responce to an email I've sent them.

It seems they are doing better and are trying to do what I asked during my little meltdown in November by keeping me up todate more.

Ironically the day I typed this up and submitted it they contacted me. No pictures yet besides just the base but I guess it's a start.

this is why I hate dealing with furries in general, they claim to be "professionals" when they are not. if I ran my "professional" business's as these people do,I'd be out of business quickly. I dont understand why it takes a year to make a costume that should take way less time to make. the whole "I'm sick I had to move, my personal life involved in my so called professional life causes delays." just know this...furries will never meet deadlines no matter what,expect delays and that you will never get what you were promised ever or a refund as that money was already spent even before any work was done to your custom suit. know that. I've never had a pleasant experience dealing with any fursuit maker even the big name ones.

Sorry but you can not Pin all Furrys together here , Not all of us spend money before work is done (I don't even if I need that money that day) and I know many other furrys who don't spend till the work is done and sent off and Not all of us let our personal lives Interupt our Work. I may take a day off when sick ones in a while (like you would in a normal professional job). I have never Past a due by date for work , It's always done in advance and I know many other furry artists who do the same.

It's Very unfare to say you we all do these things when clearly we don't. If we did No one would trust any of us but Most of us are very trust worthy

That is true, but from reading the journals, talking to people, and my own personal commissioning experiences, it seems to be pretty prevalent in the fandom.

I, too, work in a service-oriented job. The one time in the last six years one of my projects was stalled due to having to order a custom part, I made damn well sure the customer was aware of the issue, and made their work a priority as soon as the part came in.

It just seems that there are an unusual number of people in the furry-art line of work who seem to treat commissions more like hobbies, and don't *make* themselves work on paid projects when they "don't feel like it." Yes, there are people out there who are seriously professional and act like it, but they seem to be drowned out by the others. It's unfortunate.

To be honist On this blog your going to mainly get those types of people and It's not just in the fandom that people can be like that.
Sadly you only hear about the bad's of things , the bad artists , the bad commissioners because thats what people mainly talk about , you rarly hear About a good artist who does their job , Not just on here but everywhere , Bad things shine threw more.

You cannot generalize like that. It's pure ignorance.
Yes, some of the furry community is bad, some furries pull stuff like this. It's not okay and the rest of us don't like it.
That's no reason to say stuff like that towards the rest of us who are fighting against stuff like this. That's the whole reason we have stuff like AB.

I'd also call Paypal and see if they will TRY to help you, considering this is a physical item not recieved.

Firstly with paypal I'm not sure if they will because you only have 3 months to file a claim against a person.

Also if they did help me they would only give the maker 10 days to make and shipping the product to me and I don't want a rushed product. Rushed never comes out good in my oppinion. It's to likely to have bad seams and to have sloppy work.

If I have to force getting a refund and all that I will probably have to go to a lawyer. Maybe force them into court. But I REALLY don't want to do that. I'd much rather wait and have a good product as long as I can be garenteed that it's getting done and it will be done in a reasonable amount of time.

Frankly at this point, you're very likely not going to get a decent quality product to begin with, even if you don't do a claim from Paypal.

While yes Paypal say three months, if you call, escalate, and explain, chances are they will look into it.

They may consider looking into it if it was a couple months past the three month claim period but likely with it being almost a year after the claim period they're more likely to tell me that I should have contacted them sooner and alerted them to the situation and there is nothing they can do about it now.

Also I don't understand why you don't think if I'm patient that I won't receive a quality product? It's not like I hired someone that was inconsistent with their quality. The only time they showed any kind of inconsistency was when they where rushed. And that is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm fine giving them more time if they aren't just leading me along.

Making a suit is like making a piece of art. If you rush it your likely to get bad pieces wrong, colors off, missing something about the original request. With a fursuit your likely to get bad shavings, loose seems and the wrong size.

But if you allow them to take their time just like with art they can go over it again male sure the seems are right that they have the right measurements and be more cautious of their shaving of the fur.

By all means I SHOULD still get a quality product from the maker and if I do wait and they fall short of their usual quality I will demand a partial refund to have it fixed. Mostly like from a maker closer to me than they are to avoid having to send it back and risk it in the mail.

You act like I don't know that a fursuit is a labor of time and love; This isn't my first rodeo, i've commissioned and purchased several suits in my time. There are red flags going up across this entire situation, and you're gleefully ignoring them. Seriously, if she's the professional you think she is, how and why did she have to rip ALL of the face fur off to add something she somehow forgot? And you STILL haven't gotten pictures?
By all means, continue to wait. Maybe, just maybe, you'll finally get something, but I can almost promise it won't be what you paid, and waited for. You posted here after waiting for fourteen [14] MONTHS because you were clearly worried about time.

Good luck with your endeavors, it's pretty clear you're not listening to what advice we have to offer and instead want to only listen to what you want to hear.

If this suit was a labor of love for your artist, they would pride themselves on delivering good customer service to you. They wouldn't promise pictures they can't provide and forget details that cause them to rip the head up. It sounds to me like you're being given the runaround, and that she either doesn't intend to deliver or has no interest in working on your commission. Maybe she feels uninspired by your character or maybe she is finding it too hard to work on because it's beyond her skill level/you asked for something she doesn't normally do/i.e. ask a toony suit maker to make a hyper realistic costume. Your product will likely not turn out the way you wanted if it's disinterest or she's feeling out of her league.

If I were you, I would politely and professionally state my concerns. You have no problem doing it here and I am sure your fur suit artist would rather hear you're unhappy than hear, "Everything's fine," and find out later, it's really not. It can be very frustrating to work with a customer, who isn't upfront during the commissioning process. Maybe the way communication's going is interfering with your commission?

I wouldn't go into this expecting to get a partial refund. If you have a finished product in your hands, the maker is not obligated to refund you. It would be nice if they would, but given their lack of concern for you, as a customer so far, I wouldn't count on them issuing a partial refund to make you happy.

There is nothing you can do to get a guarantee though. You can try talking to the artist, but that may rush them and you're avoiding that. If they tell you it's guaranteed, they can turn around and keep doing what they're doing as promises don't mean they'll do it for sure. And you could be waiting around for a long, long time.

You asked for advice, but there's really nothing you can do if you don't want to risk rushing them or get a refund.

Also about your comment below, being patient doesn't guarantee they won't rush it. That's not to say they will, but if they start to get stressed out about how long you were waiting (And you mentioned a mini meltdown you had towards them?) they may get it done quickly to get you out of the queue. There's a lot of things that can happen in these situations.

I'm curious about this mini meltdown. How did the artist react? Was she, "Okay, I understand your concerns?" Or did she get mad and go, "One more incident, like that, and I'm canceling this commission and refunding you?" You make me think that she may have reacted badly, because you were okay with expressing your worries before, but now you are tip toeing around her. It comes off as you feel the slightest annoyance will bother her. Did you have a fight with her or something?

It sounds as if the maker hasn't really gotten anything done on your suit, to be quite honest. You've got no pictures from them, and therefore no proof that any of the items have been completed. I have to wonder if there really was any progress on the original item that they had to 'rip everything off' of, or if that was a further excuse.

I get that you're disappointed, and it looks like you have your heart set on getting a suit from this maker, but you may have to suck up your disappointment and ask for a refund at this point. They have completely failed to deliver anything to you after fourteen months. Like you - and other folks - say, having them complete the suit now could just wind up having it done in a rush job, and even if it's not rushed, it may still be low quality due to the artist's apparent distaste for working on it.

Get a refund, and commission someone else instead with the money.

I agree. The artist may very well have been doing work all along, but you have no proof of that. You've asked them time and again for that proof and they have repeatedly ignored your requests, which says to me they have nothing to show. How long does it take to snap a photo on a digital camera or phone and post it online nowadays? Like two seconds? And they can't do that in fourteen months?
I mean, I'm all for taking people at their word, but if they have no actions to back up those words, I start getting very suspicious very quickly.

As much as it sucks, you've got two options here: one, ask for a refund and find another, more reliable and communicative maker; or two, keep waiting, but keep in mind you've likely just donated free money to this person.

Hi, I see you updated your post. You probably won't receive a full refund, since it sounds like the maker has purchased materials to make the base for the head. However, you could ask for the materials to be sent to me to you and a partial refund for work not completed.
